I am writing to strongly urge Portland property owners to vote “no” on this year’s school budget. The time has come for us to stand up and send a clear message that we are sick and tired of being bled to death by our elected officials.

I would never suggest that education is not a priority. But, to what end? No one can convince me that all avenues of cost-effectiveness have been exhausted.

As a retired upper-management employee of the city of Portland, I know that services do not have to be cut to reduce budgets. This is done by finding more cost-effective ways of achieving the goal. I know this, for I accomplished it several times during my 32-year tenure. The key is that someone has to care and put forth the effort. This is never going to happen if we keep approving these budgets each year carte blanche.

Come on, folks, get out and vote and send a message that is long overdue. Let’s hold the superintendent and school board accountable!
