Catherine Pourre became the first female skipper to win the Atlantic Cup, teaming up with skipper Pietro Luciani to guide Earendil to a one-point victory in the event that concluded Sunday in Portland.

The French/Italian team built a big lead during the offshore legs from Charleston, South Carolina, to New York and from New York to Portland, then held on during the five inshore races Saturday and Sunday. Toothface II, skippered by Mike Dreese and Tristan Mouligne, settled for the runner-up position despite placing among the top three in all five inshore races.

Portland-based Amhas, with skippers Micah Davis and Rob Windsor, finished third overall.

BASEBALL

NECBL: Tyler Solomon hit a two-run homer in the second inning and the Sanford Mainers (2-2) earned a 3-0 win over the Valley Blue Sox (3-2) in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

Sanford extended its lead in the sixth when Connor Shephard doubled home Nick Howie.

Jack Weisenberger struck out five in 12/3 innings to earn the save after entering the game with the bases loaded in the eighth.

FOOTBALL

NATIONAL ARENA LEAGUE: Mason Espinosa threw five touchdown passes, three to Triston Purlfoy, as the Columbus Lions rolled past the Maine Mammoths 55-34 in Columbus, Georgia, on Saturday night.

Kenyatte Allen threw for 143 yards and two touchdowns for the Mammoths (1-7). Devin Wilson and Edgar Poe Jr. each caught a TD pass, and Jason Johnson rushed for a touchdown.

MCKENZIE DIES: Johnny “Pie” McKenzie, the diminutive right winger who was a fan favorite on the Boston Bruins in the 1970s, died Saturday night after a long illness. He was 80.

McKenzie spent seven seasons with the Bruins, including Stanley Cup-winning teams in 1970 and 1972. He also played for the Blackhawks, Red Wings and Rangers.

AUTO RACING

FORMULA ONE: Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel won the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, leading the race from the pole to the checkered flag.

It was Vettel’s 50th career win and his third of the season, and he took a one-point lead over Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes in the standings.

Valtteri Bottas was second in his Mercedes, about six seconds back. Hamilton finished fifth.

INDYCAR: Scott Dixon led the last 119 laps Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway to get his 43rd career victory – third most in IndyCar history behind A.J. Foyt (67) and Mario Andretti (52).

Dixon finished 4.3 seconds ahead of Simon Pagenaud. Alexander Rossi finished third, with James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter-Reay rounding out the top five.

XFINITY: Austin Dillon beat teammate Daniel Hemric in a rain-shortened race Saturday night at Michigan International Speedway.

OXFORD PLAINS: Scott McDaniel of Livermore overtook 16-year-old rookie Ivan Kaffel of Raymond to get his first Super Late Model victory Saturday night.

Kaffel finished second and was followed by Ryan Deane of Winterport.

Tyler King of Gray earned his third win of the season in Street Stock. Other feature winners were Rob Crepeau of Minot in Bandits, Dale Lawrence of Lisbon in Figure 8, and Thomas Brackett of Auburn in the Rookie division.
