Patriots award Leavitt
clinic with $25,000

Patsy Leavitt, a University of Southern Maine nursing professor, was recently honored by the New England Patriots with $25,000 to benefit the Leavitt’s Mill Free Health Center in Buxton, USM said in a press release.

“It’s huge,” Leavitt said of the award. “We plan to use a portion of it to cushion our operational costs. The rest will fund a series of blood tests for the detection and monitoring of chronic illnesses such as diabetes.”

Leavitt founded the free health center in 2003 to serve people without insurance.

Leavitt and the non-profit clinic were given the grand prize of the 2018 Myra Kraft Community MVP Awards in a June 12 ceremony at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The awards were renamed in 2011 in honor of the late Myra Kraft, who committed her life to volunteering.

Leavitt’s health center treats about 260 uninsured people each year. It is located at 63 Main St. in Bar Mills and can be reached at 929-6455.
