The apology by Concord Coach Lines for its outrageous “citizen check” is far from adequate. They’ve admitted a mistake and simultaneously thrown the incident into a gray area by claiming that border agents can operate in this way within 100 miles of the border, an area that includes much of Maine and Massachusetts.
Not only is this claim being challenged, but also the issue, if there is one, is not citizenship. Thousands of foreign visitors (including my Brazilian son-in-law) enter legally and spend their tourist dollars in Maine, though they are not U.S. citizens.
Concord Coach Lines has ignorantly allowed itself to be used to intimidate people who may not know their rights or are afraid to assert them.
