Portland native Josh Longstaff is returning to the NBA as an assistant coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Longstaff, formerly an assistant with the Knicks, is coming off his first season as head coach of the G League Erie BayHawks, who went 28-22 and advanced to the Eastern Conference finals. In Milwaukee he joins the staff of Mike Budenholzer, formerly of Atlanta, parent club of the BayHawks.

“The great thing about (Budenholzer) and his staff,” Longstaff said, “is that he lets the coaches do everything – development, scout, drills and practice. He’s a big believer in developing his staff.”

Longstaff, 35, spoke Tuesday morning from Houston before boarding a flight to Mexico City. He is an assistant to head coach Jeff Van Gundy of USA Basketball’s World Cup qualifying games Thursday against Mexico and Sunday against Cuba in Havana.

Included on the 12-player USA roster are former Red Claws Jon Holmes and Marcus Thornton.

BASEBALL

EASTERN LEAGUE: Jonathan Davis hit for the first cycle in franchise history as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (45-31) rolled to a 10-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (29-47) at Manchester, New Hampshire.

Davis was 4 for 4 and hit a three-run homer in the second inning.

Luke Tendler hit an RBI double for the Sea Dogs in the eighth.

NECBL: Randy Taveras hit a three-run homer to help the Danbury Westerners (8-10) collect an 8-5 victory over the Sanford Mainers (9-7) in Connecticut.

Sanford’s Austin Biggar hit a two-run homer for Sanford in the ninth.

AMERICAN LEGION: Luc Harrison went 3 for 4, with two doubles and four RBI to propel Coastal Landscape (5-2) to an 11-2 victory over Staples Crossing (3-4) in a Zone 3 game at Portland.

• AJ Eisenhart had four hits and drove in three runs to power Post 86 United (3-2) to an 8-2 victory over Cole Post at Sanford.

REGENCY MORTGAGE SUMMER LEAGUE: Bailey Walker doubled home Tyler Small in the of seventh to lift host South Portland (6-0) to a 4-3 win over Bonny Eagle (7-3) in the first game of a doubleheader.

South Portland used a seven-run sixth to rally to a 10-6 win in the second game.

• Danny Tocci threw two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, and Bruno’s (5-2) rallied to an 8-4 win in the second game to finish a sweep of Greely (2-4) in a doubleheader at Portland.

Bruno’s won the opener 2-1.

• Aaron Mooney and Zach Alof each had two hits to help Nova Seafood (6-1) open with an 11-5 win over Falmouth (1-6) in a doubleheader at Scarborough. Nova finished the sweep with a 14-0 win.

COLLEGES

FOOTBALL: The family of the Washington State football player who died of suicide in January said the 21-year-old quarterback had extensive brain damage that’s been linked to concussions from playing the sport.

Mark and Kym Hilinski told NBC’s “Today” show on Tuesday that the Mayo Clinic requested to do an autopsy of their son’s brain.

The family said the autopsy indicated their son had signs of extensive brain damage known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, which has been found in hundreds of former NFL players.

GOLF

U.S. SENIOR OPEN: John Daly has withdrawn from the event, citing a deteriorating knee condition and blaming the USGA for not allowing him to use a golf cart.

TENNIS

EASTBOURNE INTERNATIONAL: Petra Kvitova continued her fantastic form with a straight-sets win over Kateryna Bondarenko, 7-5, 6-3, in the second round at Eastbourne, England.
