WINSLOW — An 8-year-old boy was seriously injured Tuesday after falling off a zip line at a camp and hitting his head on a metal rowboat, police said.

The boy, from New York City, was immediately taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, and then flown by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to a press release from the Winslow Police Department.

The boy, who police did not name, was a camper at Camp Caribou where the incident occurred at roughly 5:20 p.m.

State fire marshals were at the camp Tuesday night and Wednesday inspecting the equipment and conducting interviews, according to a press release from Maine State Police.

“The boy, along with several others, were using the zip line to enter the water from a height of about 50 feet,” Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police, said in the release. “The boy collided with a row boat in the pond that was being used as a safety boat with a camp staffer on board. The boat may have drifted into the path of the zip line.”

The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office was notified, as a zip line is technically considered a mechanical ride in Maine.

Winslow Police Chief Shawn O’Leary said no more information was available Wednesday afternoon.

Camp Caribou is an overnight camp for boys located on 1 Caribou Way on Pattee Pond. Representatives from the camp did not return a call for comment.
