The memorial service for a respected Raymond firefighter, who was killed in a motorcycle accident earlier this week, will be held Monday.

The community is invited to attend the 10 a.m. service for Capt. David Alexander Mains at the Jordan Small Middle School in Raymond.

Massachusetts State Police said in a statement that it appears the 48-year-old Mains was operating a 2007 Yamaha XVS motorcycle on Route 495 northbound in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, on Monday when his bike struck the rear of a 2016 Mercedes-Benz C450 Sedan.

Mains was transported by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he died. His wife, Jennifer Mains, who was a passenger on the motorcycle, suffered injuries and was taken to Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

Rhonda Mann, a spokeswoman for Tufts Medical Center, said that Mains’ condition was good as of Wednesday. She was no longer a patient at the hospital Thursday, an indication that Mains had been released, Mann said Thursday evening.

Attempts to reach the Massachusetts State Police on Thursday regarding the status of their investigation into the crash and whether charges would be filed were unsuccessful, but police said the driver of the Mercedes, a 56-year-old Andover woman, and a juvenile were not injured.

According to Mains’ obituary, he enjoyed riding with the Fire and Iron Motorcycle Club, a national motorycle club for firefighters. Mains was a member of the Fire and Iron Sebago Lakes chapter. The club is composed of firefighters who ride together to raise money for charities and other causes.

Mike Doze, a firefighter from the town of Oxford and the Maine club’s sergeant at arms, declined to offer specifics on the nature of Tuesday’s ride other than to say, “David was representing Fire and Iron. It was a club ride.”

The Raymond Fire and Rescue department’s Facebook page provided a link to a fundraising effort that hopes to raise $40,000 to cover medical and memorial expenses and to make sure that the Mains’ four children are cared for.

As of Thursday evening, more than $36,000 had been raised.

“Capt. Mains was a dedicated member who loved his family, community and this department. He will be sorely missed and will leave a large void in our family and organization, which will not be filled without unmatched extraordinary efforts, pride, and dedication, which Capt. Mains put forth every day,” the Facebook post said.

In his obituary, his family said that Mains graduated from Windham High School, attended the Wentworth Institute of Technology, and received a degree in architectural drafting.

“His greatest accomplishments included being a responsible and loving father to his four children,” his obituary said.

Bruce Tupper, the town of Raymond’s fire chief, knew Mains from their years spent together on the fire department.

Tupper said that Mains joined the department on June 25, 2008 – the same date that he died in Massachusetts.

In his role as a fire department captain, Mains handled code enforcement duties and worked on the tactical side of firefighting.

“He performed extremely well as a leader and a mentor,” Tupper said. “He was an honorable man with dignity and honesty.”

Tupper said Monday’s memorial service will be a firefighter’s funeral filled with pomp, circumstance and tradition. A last alarm could be rung and stories will be told.

Firefighters are asked to attend the service in Class “A” uniforms if possible and to meet at the Raymond Elementary School across the street at 9 a.m.
