YARMOUTH — The Police Department’s K9, Matrix, will receive a bullet and stab protective vest, courtesy of nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s and donor George Leibert of York, Pennsylvania.

The mission of Vested Interest in K9s, based in East Taunton, Massachusetts, is to provide protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. It was established in 2009 and has provided more than 2,900 protective vests through donations at a value of $5.7 million dollars.

According to a news release from YPD, the average cost of a protective K9 vest is $950. Each vest is valued between $1,700 and nearly $2,300, has a five-year warranty and an average weight of 4-5 pounds. Delivery is expected within eight to 10 weeks.

Matrix, a Belgian malinois, came to the department in 2016 at 7 months old. He is Yarmouth’s first police dog since 2012.
