WOONSOCKET, R.I. — A suspect charged with shooting a Rhode Island police officer during an early morning foot chase is heading to court.

Police say 22-year-old Tyler Chandler, of Portsmouth, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on assault with a deadly weapon and other charges.

Authorities say Chandler was spotted by a Woonsocket officer on routine patrol at about 4:30 a.m. Monday carrying a gun.

Several officers gave chase and gunfire was exchanged. Officer Travis Young was struck in the thigh. He was treated at the hospital and released.

Four officers fired their weapons, but Chandler was not struck. He was apprehended after a two-hour standoff in a parking lot during which police used a concussion grenade.

Chandler was in custody and it couldn’t immediately be determined if he has a lawyer.
