Dom Nunez capped a three-run first inning with a two-run single and the Hartford Yard Goats went on to a 5-0 Eastern League victory Saturday night against the Portland Sea Dogs in Hartford, Connecticut.

Rico Garcia, Logan Cozart and Matt Pierpont combined to hold the Sea Dogs to three hits. Portland starter Matt Kent went six innings, yielding four runs on eight hits.

Michael Chavis, who recently finished serving an 80-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs, was promoted from Class A Lowell but struck out in all four of his at-bats.

NECBL: Tyler Solomon homered and hit a bases-loaded double during a seven-run seventh inning as the Sanford Mainers (13-10) earned a 14-7 win over the North Adams SteepleCats (9-15) in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game in North Adams, Massachusetts.

Austin Lively had four hits, three RBI and five runs scored.

Jake Dexter pitched three scoreless innings of relief, striking out six, to pick up the win.

EMPIRE LEAGUE: Marcus Guzman scored twice and drove home two runs with a pair of doubles, and Nick Landell added three RBI as the Puerto Rico Islanders (12-7) took a 7-6 victory over the Old Orchard Beach Surge (9-12) in Aguada, Puerto Rico.

Delvin Ramos drove home four runs for the Surge with a homer and a pair of singles.

AMERICAN LEGION: Brogan McDonald drove home four runs with four hits in the first game, and Riley Hasson had five hits and five RBI in Game 2 as Yankee Ford (11-0) swept a doubleheader from Staples Crossing (4-7), winning 14-0 and 25-7 in South Portland.

Hunter Owen added a three-run homer in Game 2. Cooper Whitehouse hit a two-run shot for Staples Crossing.

JUNIOR LEGION: Chris Cimino and Jackson Header each contributed two hits and an RBI, and combined on a five-hitter to lead Thirsty Turf (10-1) to a 13-3 win over Topsham Post 202 (3-9) at Cheverus High.

Hayden O’Donnell had three hits and two RBI for Thirsty Turf.

INDYCAR: Indianapolis 500 winner Will Power will start from the front row for Sunday’s race at Iowa Speedway after winning the pole.

Power was the fastest during qualifying with a two-lap average of 182.391 mph.

FORMULA ONE: Lewis Hamilton prevailed in a tight battle with points leader Sebastian Vettel to snatch the pole position for the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, England.

It’s the fourth straight pole for Hamilton at Silverstone, his sixth overall on the track and his 50th for Mercedes.

OXFORD PLAINS: Defending track champion Alan Tardiff of Lyman earned his first win of the season in the 50-lap Super Late Model feature Friday.

Gabe Brown, 15, of Center Conway, New Hampshire, finished second, and Tracy Gordon of Strong took third.

Kenny Harrison of Durham placed first in the 50-lap Street Stock event, Brandon Varney of Mechanic Falls won in Bandits, and Kyle Kilgore of South Paris prevailed in the Figure 8 race.

CYCLING

TOUR DE FRANCE: Chris Froome tumbled off the road into a grassy field in the opening stage, immediately putting his pursuit of a record-tying fifth title in peril.

With grass stains on his right shoulder and back, Froome crossed 51 seconds behind Fernando Gaviria, a Colombian who claimed the race’s first yellow jersey with a commanding sprint victory in the 125-mile stage from the island of Noirmoutier-en-l’Ile on the Atlantic coast to Fontenay-le-Comte.

BASKETBALL

HONEYCUTT DIES: Former UCLA and Sacramento Kings player Tyler Honeycutt was found dead early Saturday morning in Los Angeles following a shootout with police, according to multiple reports.

Police received a call around 5 p.m. Friday from Honeycutt’s mother that her son was “acting erratically.” When police arrived on scene, Honeycutt reportedly opened fire at the officers, who returned fire. Honeycutt then barricaded himself inside a residence for hours, according to police.

When SWAT officers entered the residence around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, police located an “unresponsive male” and pronounced Honeycutt dead at the scene, according to a tweet from the LAPD.
Honeycutt was drafted by the Kings in 2011 and played 24 games over two seasons.

HOCKEY

NHL: The Vegas Golden Knights signed defenseman Colin Miller to a four-year contract with an average salary of $3.87 million.

Miller, 25, led Golden Knights defensemen with a career-high 41 points (10 goals, 31 assists) after being claimed from the Bruins in the expansion draft.
