Hunter Owen was named the top pitcher in the SMAA this spring.

Scarborough’s Bella Dickinson helped the Red Storm win another Class A state championship and was named to the SMAA softball all-star team.

Karli Chapin helped Cape Elizabeth’s girls’ lacrosse team win a surprise state title last month and was named a WMC all-star for her play.

The spring sports season provided no shortage of starry performances and fittingly, an abundance of local standouts were named to postseason all-star teams.

Here’s a recap:

Baseball

The Southwestern Maine Activities Association baseball all-conference team featured many familiar names.

The first-team included Scarborough pitcher Nick Thompson and South Portland shortstop Riley Hasson and pitcher Hunter Owen.

South Portland’s Owen (designated hitter) and Noah McHugh (second base) were second-team selections.

Scarborough’s Noah Frink and South Portland’s Zach Johnson were honorable mention selections.

South Portland’s Jake Poole (first base) was named to the SMAA All-Defensive team.

The SMAA All-Academic team included South Portland’s Daniel Mickiewicz.

South Portland’s Owen was also named the SMAA Most Valuable Player and was given the Edson Hadlock Award winner, as the league’s Most Valuable Pitcher.

South Portland’s Mike Owens was named SMAA Coach of the Year.

In the Western Maine Conference, Cape Elizabeth senior pitcher Carson Sullivan and senior catcher Brendan Tinsman made the first-team.

Tinsman was also named WMC Player of the Year and won the Dr. John Winkin “Mr. Baseball” Award, as the state’s finest senior player.

Cape Elizabeth’s Sean Agrodnia qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.

Scarborough’s Thompson and South Portland’s Owen were selected to play in the Underclass All-Star Game.

Cape Elizabeth’s Sullivan and Tinsman and South Portland’s Hasson played for the South in the Senior All-Star Game. Scarborough’s Morgan Pratt was also selected, but did not play.

Cape Elizabeth’s Tinsman qualified for the Maine team for the Maine vs. New Hampshire Senior All-Star Game.

Cape Elizabeth’s Tinsman qualified for the USA Today Maine All-USA first-team, he was also named Maine’s Player of the Year. South Portland’s Hasson and Owen also made the first-team.

Softball

For the second year in a row, Scarborough’s softball team stole headlines and after winning another Class A championship, the Red Storm placed several players on the SMAA All-Conference team.

The first-team included pitcher Chloe Griffin and outfielder Laura Powell, as well as South Portland all-purpose player Grace Rende.

The second-team featured Scarborough pitcher Bella Dickinson, first baseman Felicia O’Reilly and all-purpose player Hunter Greenleaf, as well as South Portland outfielder Maeve Kelley.

Honorable mentions included Scarborough’s Sam Carreiro and Lindsey Kelley and South Portland’s Ashlee Aceto and Chloe Grant.

The SMAA All-Academic team included Scarborough’s Chloe Griffin, Hunter Greenleaf, Felicia O’Reilly, Laura Powell, Ivy DiBiase and Sam Carreiro.

Scarborough’s Ivy DiBiase shared the Peter Meagher Award with Windham’s Megan Joy.

In the WMC, Cape Elizabeth junior pitcher Jessie Robicheaw and freshman shortstop Julia Torre made the first-team.

Cape Elizabeth freshman pitcher Anna Cornell was named to the second-team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Katie Bozek qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.

Scarborough’s Greenleaf, Griffin, O’Reilly and Powell all represented the South in the Senior All-Star Game.

Cape Elizabeth’s Robicheaw and South Portland’s Rende were named to the Class of 2019 All-Star team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Cornell and Torre and Scarborough’s Dickinson were named to the Classes of 2020/2021 All-Star team.

Boys’ lacrosse

The SMAA boys’ lacrosse all-conference first-team included Scarborough senior defenseman Reece Lagerquist and junior utilityman Nick Quartararo, along with South Portland junior attack Cooper Mehlhorn.

South Portland junior attack David Fiorini, junior defenseman Shippen Savidge and junior goalie Quinn Watson made the second-team.

Scarborough’s Andrew Granzier and South Portland’s Jack Tierney were honorable mentions.

Scarborough’s Eric Quirk, Jacob DaRosa, Ryan McDonnell, Andrew Cusson and Joshua DeRosa and South Portland’s Aidan Schifano qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

In the WMC, Cape Elizabeth senior attack Jacob Brydson, senior middie Finn Raymond, junior middie Sam Dresser and sophomore defenseman Max Patterson made the first-team.

Cape Elizabeth junior longstick middie John O’Connor and sophomore goalie Jack Dresser were named to the second-team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Raymond and Tate Perkins, Scarborough’s Lagerquist and South Portland’s Tierney took part in the Senior All-Star Game.

Cape Elizabeth’s Patterson, Jack Dresser, Sam Dresser, Andrew Carroll, Brendan Goss, Killian Lathrop, Archie McEvoy and Phil Tarling, Scarborough’s Quartararo and Jackson Taylor and South Portland’s Mehlhorn, Watson and Josh Doan played in the Underclass All-Star Game. 

Cape Elizabeth’s Raymond and South Portland’s Mehlhorn were chosen as two of Maine’s nine All-Americans.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, the WMC first-team included senior attackers Chloe Chapin and Susie Graham and junior goalie Erin Foley from Class B state champion Cape Elizabeth.

Cape Elizabeth sophomore midfielder Karli Chapin and junior defender Brooke Harvey were named to the second-team.

The WMC All-Academic team featured Cape Elizabeth’s Chloe Chapin, Emily Healy and Madison Sarka.

In the SMAA, Scarborough senior attack Ellie Smith made the first-team.

The second-team included Scarborough junior attack Erin Stolz and South Portland senior midfielder Paige Fleming and junior attack Jena Leckie.

Scarborough sophomore defender Madison Marinko and freshman goalie Kathleen Murphy were honorable mentions.

Scarborough’s Murphy and South Portland’s Abby Trefsger made the SMAA All-Rookie team.

Scarborough’s Maegan Neilon, Marissa Edwards and Haley Koukos and South Portland’s Sara Axelrod, Madison Cyr and Paige Fleming qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

Scarborough’s Marielle Smith and South Portland’s Paige Fleming played for the “Green” team (which was coached by South Portland’s Leslie Dyer), while Cape Elizabeth’s Chloe Chapin, Susie Graham and Emily Healy played on the “Gold” team in the Senior All-Star game.

Track

The SMAA boys’ outdoor track first-team included Scarborough’s Anthony Clavette (high jump), Jarret Flaker (100, 200, 400 and 300 hurdles), Ben Hatch (long jump) and the Red Storm’s 4×800 relay team (Harrison Osborne, Erik Larkin, John Goff and Noah Drapeau).

Scarborough’s Flaker (110 hurdles) and South Portland’s Jacob Costin (racewalk) qualified for the second-team.

Scarborough’s Hatch (100), Tristram Coffin (two-mile), Drew Gardner (pole vault) and Nathan Mars (shot put) and South Portland’s Armel Maloji (triple jump) and Cliff Robbins-Sennewald (racewalk) were third-teamers.

Scarborough’s Bradley DuPerre, Erik Larkin and Charles Piper and South Portland’s Zachary Dyer and Joshua Hyssong qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

The SMAA girls’ first-team included Scarborough’s Anna Gardner (pole vault) and Emily Labbe (100 hurdles) and South Portland’s Rebekah Hunnewell-Dunphe (shot put) and Juliana Selser (mile).

Scarborough’s Labbe (300 hurdles) qualified for the second-team.

Scarborough’s Bethany Sholl (two-mile) and South Portland’s Anna Folley (800) and Kaleisha Towle (300 hurdles) made the third-team.

Scarborough’s Lillian Patten, Lauren Sabatino and Samantha Saraceno and South Portland’s Juliana Selser qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

In the WMC, Cape Elizabeth’s Darcy Cochran (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 200) made the girls’ first-team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Kristen Penley (long jump) qualified for the second-team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Adeline Hayes and Fiona Simpson qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.

The WMC boys’ first-team included Cape Elizabeth’s Matthew Concannon (200) and Matthew Conley (high jump).

Cape Elizabeth’s Concannon (100) and Jack Bassett (two-mile) qualified for the second-team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Michael Brooks, Anthony Inhorn, Alessio Barreta, Caleb Weinstein-Zenner and Nathan Labrie qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.

Tennis

Cape Elizabeth’s Katie Gilman and Blair Hollyday made the WMC girls’ tennis singles first-team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Isabel Berman was a second-team selection.

Cape Elizabeth’s Erin O’Rourke and Bridget Brett made the doubles team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Bridget Brett, Katie Gilman and Erin O’Rourke qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.

On the boys’ side, Cape Elizabeth’s Alex Hansen was a first-team singles selection.

Cape Elizabeth’s Sam Berman and Maximo Kesselhaut made the doubles team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Sam Berman qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.

In the SMAA, the girls’ second-team included Scarborough’s Abby Ricker.

Scarborough’s Amelia Hardy and Caelyn Sheil made the doubles first-team.

The SMAA All-Academic team included Scarborough’s Ajay Challapalli, Ibrahim Chand, Aiden Cohen, Sophie Glidden, Joshua Harder and Isabella Ingream and South Portland’s Lilliana Brandao, Lyndsey Green, Andrew Leblanc, Andrea Trieu and Sarah Weden.
