Bennett H. Barnes died at home on 10 July, 2018. Born in Waterbury, CT on 17 July, 1933, the son of Mildred and Bennett Barnes Sr., he graduated from Meriden High School. He then enrolled in Colgate University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Chi, and editor of the college newspaper.

He was a graduate of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale earning master’s and honorary doctorate degrees. Ben received a master of education degree from Harvard and a doctorate in religion from Boston University. During these years he served as chaplain and taught history at Casady School in Oklahoma City. In 1968, he began summer chaplaincy services for Bailey Island Episcopal Chapel.

He became headmaster of St. Stephen’s School in Bradenton, FL in 1976. In 1986, he became rector of All Angels by the Sea, on Longboat Key, FL, where he worked until his retirement.

After his retirement he continued his Episcopal ministry by serving seven interim positions in both Florida and Maine. Relocating to Maine in 2006, he was active in the Mid Coast Maine Hunger Prevention Program in Brunswick, ME.

Married in 1962, he is survived by his wife Beth, daughter Anne and her partner Glen Dalpe, son David and his wife Bridgett, and grandchildren Thomas Hancox, Gracie Hancox, Chad Barnes, and Dylan Barnes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mid Coast Maine Hunger Prevention Program, or a local food pantry of your choice.

The family will host a celebration of his life in the fall.
