WESTBROOK — Westbrook police took a suicidal man into custody Friday after someone reported that he was holed up in his West Pleasant Street house with a shotgun.
Police got the initial call around 12:42 p.m. and responded, but officers received information that the man may have left the area in his work truck, a Pine State Services van with green graphics, and was possibly circling the neighborhood.
While police were searching the area, they located an identical truck, this one driven by another employee of the same company.
Police continued to search for the suicidal man while keeping a perimeter around his home.
Police soon located him a block from his house on Mechanic Street, and conducted a high-risk traffic stop near Prospect Street. They took the man into custody without incident.
He was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland for a mental health evaluation, police said.
In the work truck, officers found a shotgun and a realistic-looking pellet gun. In the man’s home they found another realistic-looking pellet rifle, police said.
Westbrook police continue to review the situation to determine whether charges are warranted.
Police did not identify the man.
