CATHERINE REID, Junior-Lacrosse

Reid was an unstoppable scoring machine who reached a career milestone during a prolific season.

Well-known for her basketball prowess, Reid (who also plays soccer) did it all on the lacrosse field for the Lions who made the playoffs this spring for just the second time in 14 years.

Reid, who was a first-team league all-star as a sophomore, was the focal point of opposing defenses all season, but she consistently frustrated them, scoring a whopping 69 goals. She also set up teammates 25 times for goals and collected 42 ground balls.

Highlights included four goals against Wells, four goals in a win over Westbrook, five goals (including the 100th of her career) in a loss to South Portland, six goals in a loss to Cony, six goals (to go with four assists) in a win over North Yarmouth Academy, seven goals in a loss to Erskine Academy, four goals in a loss to Biddeford, seven goals (to go with four assists) in a win over Sanford, four goals, including the winner, against Noble and four goals in a victory over rival Deering, which clinched a playoff spot.

Reid then scored all four MGA goals in a Class C quarterfinal round loss to St. Dom’s.

Reid is MGA’s all-time leading scorer, a distinction she figures to hold forever with the recent news that the school is closing.

Reid still has one high school season left to turn heads, then she’ll have the opportunity to play at the next level, if she so desires.

You can’t stop Catherine Reid, MGA’s Spring Athlete of the Year, you can only hope to limit her from scoring goals in abundance and very few teams were able to do that this season.

Coach Eric Wales’ comment: “Catherine’s raw talent and self-confidence makes her one of the best female three-sport athletes in the state. Her teammates know that when she’s on the field that they’re in good hands. Catherine will check the ball out of the opponent’s stick, pick up the ground ball, weave her way through the defense and possess the ball to play to our strengths. Ever game she’s double- or even triple-teamed and she comes off the field banged up and bruised, but she’s always at practice the next day. She’s quite remarkable.”
