Re: “Legal experts: Precedents are unlikely to safeguard Roe v. Wade” (July 8, Page A1):

Sen. Susan Collins’ test for the next Supreme Court judge is only a respect for precedent. It is not a firm stand on the important issue of women’s reproductive rights.

Sen. Collins does not yet see that this administration has become a one-man rule. In fact, no Republican senators dare counter what President Trump wants. If you don’t toe the line, you’ll get tweeted and lose.

His advisers are also in a losing position. Most of President Trump’s advisers attempted to stop him from his thoughtless handling of tariffs, predicting correctly that it would wreak havoc on U.S. companies and farmers who rely on exporting their goods. If Trump were the CEO of GM, it would have gone bankrupt. Trump doesn’t get that you have to plan an assembly line, you have to have established suppliers, reliable pricing, schedules and deliveries. He does whatever he feels like all the time. This is the Whim President.

The immigration laws change day by day. Immigration lawyers cannot keep up with it. Civil institutions do not do well with capriciousness.

The Whim President is disrespectful of democracy. He is not really aware of what a democracy is and how it functions. He is happy to be rid of democracy altogether, as long as he’s winning.

This is the Win-Lose President. Where the post-Cold War climate depends on win-win to maintain peace, the U.S. president, who used to be the leader of the free world, doesn’t care about peace or freedom. He admires Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un. Our president calls the press the “enemy of the people” – a phrase first used by Josef Stalin.

Sen. Collins doesn’t yet understand that in the long run, this democracy stands to lose if no one fights for our country against an autocrat posing as president.
