Unseeded Jai Aslam upset top-ranked Tyler Adams to win the men’s open singles title of the Betty Blakeman Memorial tennis tournament on Sunday at the Racket and Fitness Center in Portland.
Aslam defeated Adams in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Aslam earned his spot in the championship match by beating second-seeded Daruy Vykhodtsev in the quarterfinals, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 and third-ranked Sam Leeman, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Top-seeded Olivia Leavitt claimed the women’s singles title in the three-day tournament held at Yarmouth High School and elsewhere. Leavitt beat No. 2 Rosemary Campanella, 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
HALL OF FAME OPEN: Steve Johnson continued his long road back to success this year by capturing the title at Newport, Rhode Island.
The 28-year-old American defeated Ramkumar Ramanathan, of India, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, on the grass court for his fourth career ATP title and second this season.
GSTAAD: Top-seeded Alize Cornet of France won her sixth career title by beating Mandy Minella of Luxembourg 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the Ladies’ Championship Gstaad final in Switzerland.
CYCLING
TOUR DE FRANCE: Magnus Cort Nielsen of Denmark sprinted away from two other challengers to win Stage 15, while Geraint Thomas had no trouble holding the overall lead for a fourth consecutive day
Cort claimed his first career win at the Tour after staying ahead of Ion Izagirre and Bauke Mollema in a sprint over the final 200 meters. Cort Nielsen finished the hilly 112.7-mile leg from Millau that ended in a long descent to Carcassonne in 4 hours, 25 minutes.
Thomas and the rest of the overall contenders arrived at Carcassonne 13 minutes late. Thomas kept his advantage of 1 minute, 39 seconds over defending champion Chris Froome before the race’s second rest day on Monday.
• Team Sky rider Gianni Moscon was expelled from the Tour after he appeared to deliberately hit a fellow cyclist during the race. The Italian lashed out at French rider Elie Gesbert of Team Fortuneo during Stage 15.
GOLF
PGA: A thunderstorm suspended the fourth round of the Barbasol Championship until Monday morning.
Sunday’s third stoppage of play at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky, came with the four leaders – Hunter Mahan, Robert Streb, Tom Lovelady and Troy Merritt at 18-under par – and four other contenders waiting to begin the round.
AUTO RACING
FORMULA ONE: Lewis Hamilton regained the championship lead in unexpected and dramatic fashion, winning the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim after Sebastian Vettel crashed while leading near the end.
Heavy rain played havoc late as Vettel misjudged a basic entry into a turn and slid over the gravel into the barriers with 15 laps to go. His mishap opened the door for Hamilton, who went from fourth at the time of the crash to his fourth win of the season and 66th overall.
FOOTBALL
NATIONAL ARENA LEAGUE: The Maine Mammoths (5-8) won their third straight home game on Saturday, with a 50-14 victory over the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (0-13) at Portland.
Rob Brown had one touchdown rushing and another receiving in the first half to help the Mammoths open a 37-7 lead.
