Portland executive to lead Maine Center Ventures

Theresa “Terry” Sutton of Portland is the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Maine Center Ventures at the University of Maine System.

Maine Center Ventures is a new tax-exempt entity developed as part of the plan for the Maine Center for Graduate and Professional Studies (the Maine Center) to expand partnerships and strengthen the ties between university programs and Maine’s civic, business, and legal communities.

Sutton is a former senior vice president for business transformation at L.L. Bean and has also held executive positions at Portland-area employers WEX, Inc. and CashStar.

Sutton was chosen as the first CEO of Maine Center Ventures following an extensive national executive search. She holds a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a former trustee of the University of Maine System and a board member of Preble Street.

Recognition

Yarmouth detailer Scott Macha of Total Eclipse Auto Detailing was handpicked for the second year by master detailer Renny Doyle to join the 15th annual Air Force One Detailing Team. Macha, who was named Detailer of the Year last year by the Detail Mafia, and 64 other professional detailers from around the nation hit Seattle’s Museum of Flight July 15–22.

Veronica-Iris Bates is the first Miss Teen Maine to crack the top five in the Miss Teen North America pageant. Bates, 18, a recent Portland High School graduate, placed third and also won the Miss Teen Fitness award in June in Orlando.

Community and staff honorees were recognized at Tedford Housing’s annual meeting and awards event June 26 at The Brunswick Golf Club. The Margit Cook Award for exemplary volunteer service was given to Brenda Houdlette. The Tedford Home Award for those who help meet its mission of ending homelessness was awarded to Oasis Free Clinics. The Scooty Brownell Award, given annually to those who have a history of supporting Tedford Housing in more than one way, was given to Doug Morrell.

Shawn and Marcy Cox of Servpro of Bath/Brunswick received the Servpro Chairman’s Bronze award at the recent annual convention, held at Walt Disney World in Orlando in June.

Maine Life Real Estate Co. in Scarborough announced that Kim Tarbox received the company’s Top Agent Award, as her year-over-year sales, from July 2017 to June 2018, exceeded $9 million. Tarbox was also recognized for ranking among the Top 100 residential agents in the state of Maine during the first half of 2018.

New Ventures

The James M. Roux Fellow for 2018 has been awarded to Scott Dolan of South Portland. Dedicated funding from the Maine Justice Foundation will provide support for Dolan, a student at the University of Maine School of Law, while he works as a legal intern at the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic for the summer.

Dolan came to his legal studies after a career as a reporter and editor, including at the Portland Press Herald. He covered the courts, prisons and legal affairs, and was inspired to redirect his career so he could help the Mainers he so often wrote about.

Hires, promotions, appointments

Girl Scouts of Maine announced that Carrie McAleese Riley of Falmouth was elected president of the board of directors. McAleese Riley is a public relations and marketing strategist and leads Garrand Moehlenkamp’s public relations department. She has created and managed campaigns and counseled clients that include Dunkin’ Donuts, Maine Department of Transportation, and HP Hood. 

Jodi U. Watson has been hired as vice president and wealth management officer at People’s United Bank’s Portland office. Watson is an active member of her community and has been involved with United Way, Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce and Yarmouth Rowing Boosters.

Former South Portland resident Jeffrey Morton is the new director for the U.S. Selective Service. Morton was nominated by Gov. Paul R. LePage and was sworn in July 12 by Selective Service System Deputy Director John Prigmore at the Hall of Flags in the State House in Augusta. LePage and Maj. Gen. Douglas Farnham, adjutant general, Maine National Guard, presided over the swearing-in ceremony to commemorate Morton’s new appointment. As state director, Morton will be the liaison between the Selective Service System and the governor’s office.
