OAKLAND — State and Oakland police on Tuesday night were investigating the death of an 8-year-old boy at a home in Oakland, according to a state police spokesman.
First responders were sent to the home at 19 Church St. just after 6 p.m., and the child was found dead inside, Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a news release. Police have been talking to the parents, and team of evidence technicians will assist detectives as they investigate the circumstances of the death, he said.
The body will be taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy, which probably will take place Wednesday, McCausland said. Additional information is expected to be released Wednesday.
At least 10 officers from the Maine State Police and the Oakland Police Department, including Oakland police Chief Michael Tracy, could be seen gathered around 7 p.m. outside the house at 19 Church St.
Yellow caution tape surrounded the front of the house.
Oakland police Cpt. Rick Stubbert would not say whether the death was considered suspicious or release the identity of the person who died.
Several people gathered nearby in the parking lot of the American Legion on Church Street identified themselves as family members but declined to comment.
