NEW YORK — To the New York Yankees, left-hander J.A. Happ put checkmarks in a lot of boxes – familiar with the AL East, comfortable in the postseason and perhaps most importantly, successful against the Boston Red Sox.

Hours after ace reliever Zach Britton donned pinstripes for the first time, the Yankees also acquired the starting pitcher they sought Thursday. They got Happ from Toronto for infielder Brandon Drury and minor league outfielder Billy McKinney.

“We definitely satisfied some needs here,” General Manager Brian Cashman said.

Happ, who turns 36 in October, is 10-6 with a 4.18 ERA in 20 starts and was a first-time All-Star. He joins a rotation with Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia and Sonny Gray. Manager Aaron Boone said it hasn’t been determined when Happ will make his Yankees debut.

CUBS: A man who had a plastic bucket on his head during a game might have saved himself from serious injury when a large metal pin fell from Wrigley Field’s center-field scoreboard.

A team spokesman told the Chicago Tribune that the 19-year-old was hit by a 6- to 8-inch pin during Tuesday night’s game against Arizona. The man received five staples to close a cut on his head but the bucket apparently helped shield him.
