Diocese raises over $62,000 for faith-in-action program

Diocese of Portland parishes and schools partnered to raise more than $62,000 for the Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl program during Lent this spring. CRS Rice Bowl is a faith-in-action program that encourages Catholics to fill cardboard bowls with monetary donations, giving alms to those in need and honoring Jesus’ call to serve our neighbors.

Over 50 Catholic parishes, schools and groups in Maine participated in the 2018 program, contributing a total of $62,312.57.

Cumberland County panel awards $68,000 in grants

The Cumberland County Committee of the Maine Community Foundation has awarded more than $68,000 in grants to 13 nonprofits, including ProsperityME: The Center for Financial Education, which works to provide equitable housing for asylum seekers and refugees.

Other grant recipients include Harpswell Heritage Land Trust and Pine Tree Legal Assistance.

The Cumberland County Fund is a permanent endowment that supports projects and nonprofits that strengthen communities. Applications go through the foundation’s Community Building Grant Program and are reviewed by a committee. The next proposal deadline is Feb. 15. County employees donate $7,000 to Operation HOPE

Staff from Cumberland County government recently donated nearly $7,000 to Scarborough Police Chief Robbie Moulton for the ongoing efforts of Operation HOPE, a program that supports Mainers struggling with opiate addiction.

Individuals undergo a screening process to identify a treatment program and sometimes a scholarship bed. Operation HOPE has placed more than 330 Maine individuals in treatment since it launched in 2015 and has earned recognition from organizations like the American Red Cross.

Scarborough Kiwanis gets $1,000 grant from Walmart

The Scarborough Kiwanis Club has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation.

The funds will be used to support the Scarborough Schools vacation food backpack program to provide boxed food for needy children to take home during school vacation days.

SIS Bank workers give $500 to southern Maine hospice

SIS Bank has donated $500 to the Hospice of Southern Maine on behalf of its Employee Donation Program.

The mission of Hospice of Southern Maine is to provide compassion, care and comfort through the end of life for patients with life-limiting illnesses, as well as support for their families. Care may be provided at The Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough or in the comfort of the patient’s home.

Church looking for singers to fill positions in SUUC Choir

The Sanford Unitarian Universalist Church is seeking singers to participate in its SUUC Choir, meeting a few times a year for rehearsals at 5 Lebanon St., in advance of planned performances.

The choral group is open to those who have good ears; you don’t need to be able to read music.

Martin’s Point volunteers clean riding center paddocks

A $1,000 donation from Martin’s Point Health Care to support Riding to the Top Therapeutic Riding Center’s summer programs, has spurred one group of Martin’s Point employees to volunteer.

Nine members of the Martin’s Point Health Care marketing team recently donated their time to clean RTT horse paddocks.

Friday is deadline to submit poster for 2019 fair contest

Friday is the deadline to submit art to be considered for the 2019 Common Ground Country Fair Poster Contest.

The theme of the design must be in line with Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association’s mission and the general guidelines for participating in the fair. Maine residents and MOFGA members are welcome to enter. Contest guidelines and applications are available at mofga.org/The-Fair/Poster.

The winner will receive $2,500. The selected design will be featured on the fair poster, website, T-shirt and in promotional literature.

Multipurpose facility raises $3.8 million of $4.7 million

The St. John the Baptist multipurpose facility is nearing completion, with $3.8 million of the $4.7 million fundraising goal reached.
