Hearst wants to buy a second television station in southern Maine.

The company, which owns WMTW (ABC affiliate channel 8) in Portland/Auburn, is buying WPXT in Portland, which airs as channel 51 on most cable systems. The station carries programming from the CW network under the names MeTV and MyNetworkTV.

Hearst is buying the station from Ironwood Communications. Terms were not disclosed, and the deal is subject to regulatory approval.

The acquisition would give Hearst six stations in New England – in addition to the two in Portland, it also owns a station in Boston, another in Manchester, New Hampshire; and two stations in the Burlington, Vermont/Plattsburgh, New York market.

The deal is under review by the Federal Communications Commission, which is expected to make a decision within 60 days or so, according to a Hearst official.

Hearst owns Hearst Television, which owns and operates television and radio stations serving 26 media markets across 39 states. The parent company owns cable networks, newspapers and magazines.
