The Department of Health and Human Services has suspended the license of a Sanford day care while it is under investigation, but the owner says she closed the business because she is retiring.

The license for Faye’s Family Day Care has been suspended for 10 days pending the outcome of the investigation, according to the department. A department official said no information about the nature of the investigation is available because it is ongoing.

Emily Spencer, Maine DHHS spokeswoman, said the owner has since surrendered her license to operate a child care. While no further licensing action will take place, Spencer said DHHS will complete its investigation.

The day care on North Avenue closed Tuesday, according to state records. It has been licensed by DHHS for at least the past 20 years and can serve up to 12 children.

Operator Faye Beety said in a brief phone interview Tuesday that the department came in and asked some questions, but that she does not believe she is under investigation. She said she closed her business because she’s retiring.

“I’m 79. It’s time,” she said.

Information about Faye’s Family Day Care available online through the department’s website indicates a statement of deficiency was issued against the business on Sept. 21, 2014, and resolved on Sept. 30, 2014. It does not indicate what the deficiency was or how it was resolved.
