LEWISTON — A man and a woman were listed in critical condition Thursday night after they fell from a third-floor porch of an apartment building on Pierce Street just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Lt. David St. Pierre said the two were taken from 133 Pierce St. to Central Maine Medical Center where they were admitted to the intensive care unit.

He declined to release their names or ages.

“We are certainly in hopes the victims involved in this fall will recover fully and our thoughts are with them, their families and friends,” St. Pierre said.

Police Detective David Levesque also was taken to CMMC after inhaling glass when he kicked down a door while responding to the scene. “He was having some difficulty breathing,” St. Pierre said Wednesday night.

On Thursday, St. Pierre said Levesque had been treated and released and was back on the job Thursday.

At the scene Wednesday night, the side porch railing on the third story of the three-story building was missing. The victims fell onto the paved driveway of the house next door, and a pile of railing slats sat on the ground. Police cars lined the street as officers ducked out of the rain to interview witnesses.

Detectives were still working on the case Thursday and hoping to interview the victims to develop a clear picture of how the fall happened, St. Pierre said.

Preliminary findings suggest it was accidental, he said.

“There’s nothing at this point to lead us to believe there’s anything suspicious other than a railing giving way,” St. Pierre said.

The building is described as a three-family residence owned by Bailbrook Properties LLC of Standish, according to city property records.
