EXPLORE THE INTERTIDAL ZONE of Reid State Park’s Griffith’s Head with KELT Naturalists on Aug. 7. KENNEBEC ESTUARY LAND TRUST STAFF

WOOLWICH

The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust invites children and families to the KELT Kids Day of Play on Saturday at noon. Activities include nature journaling, kiteflying, geocaching, and exploration of ponds, fields and forests of Schulten Farm in Woolwich.

KELT Kids Day of Play is free and is a light rain or shine event. Registration is strongly encouraged at kennebecestuary.org or calling Becky Kolak at (207) 442-8400.

The public is also invited to join Kennebec Estuary Land Trust staff and Maine Master Naturalist Volunteers, Becky Kolak and Ruth Indrick, Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 1-3 p.m. at Reid State Park in Georgetown to learn about life in the intertidal zone. This is a free, family-friendly event.

Indrick and Kolak will meet participants at Griffith’s Head, in the grassy picnic area between the parking lot and wooden roadway bridge. Activities include hunting for creatures in the tide pools hidden along the rocky shoreline and a demonstration on how to spot the differences between common seaweed species. Participants may learn about the invasive European green crab and how it is impacting this tidal habitat and the animals that live there. Indrick will let participants try out techniques used by local students to collect data on current green crab populations.

The program is free and open to the public. Participants will need to pay the state park entrance fee. This is a light rain or shine event and registration is strongly encouraged at kennebecestuary.org/. This event is sponsored by the Merrymeeting Bay Trust, Bath Savings Trust Company, and First Federal Savings.
