The body of a man reported missing on Moosehead Lake was found by Maine Warden Service divers Saturday afternoon.
The body of Robert Hammond, 66, of Hanson, Massachusetts, was located about 12:45 p.m., warden service Lt. Kevin Adam said in a statement.
Hammond’s boat was found Thursday afternoon near the southern end of Moose Island on the lake.
Wardens said Hammond left Spencer Bay camps late Thursday morning and traveled south to Greenville, where he docked at the public landing. He bought some gas from a local store and headed back north on the lake. Then “for some reason his watercraft made a 180-degree slow turn” and stopped on the shore of Moose Island, where it was found by the warden service, Adam said.
The warden service did not release information about how Hammond came to be in the water. It said an autopsy will be performed by the state Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
Warden service divers and canine teams, Maine State Police canine teams, Maine Association of Search and Rescue personnel and canine teams, and Piscataquis County Search and Rescue helped in the search, Adam said.
