MACHIAS – A University of Maine at Machias professor has filed a lawsuit against his union citing a recent Supreme Court decision that allowed employees to leave a union over political disagreements.

The Bangor Daily News reports 61-year-old Jonathan Reisman filed his lawsuit against the union, the Machias campus and the University of Maine System board of trustees this month.

Reisman lists several political positions the union took that he opposed, including spending dues money to oppose Gov. Paul LePage’s election and to support Hillary Clinton for president in 2016.

Reisman is active in the Maine Republican Party, and he ran an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 1998.

UMaine System general counsel James Thelen said Wednesday they haven’t formed a defense, but there are no allegations the university acted unlawfully.
