BRUNSWICK

Bowdoin College senior Matty McColl set a program record with four assists in the Polar Bear men’s soccer team’s season-opening 4-0 win over the University of New England on Tuesday afternoon.

McColl breaks the former record of three assists in a game held by five different players, most recently by Danny Chaffetz against Bates in 2010.

The Polar Bears (1-0) controlled the pace of play throughout but failed to find the back of the net until late in the opening half. UNE netminder Will Shearon kept his team in contention with six first-half saves, including several diving efforts to keep Bowdoin off the board.

CJ Masterson finally broke through for Bowdoin in the 43rd minute as a cross from McColl bounced through the box to his waiting foot. Masterson blasted a shot under the crossbar to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 edge heading into the break.

Bowdoin scored three times in a 13-minute span in the second half to put the contest on ice, all off nifty feeds from McColl. He broke loose Charlie Ward with a long ball to help the first-year notch his first collegiate goal in the 59th minute before feeding Drake Byrd a low cross in the 65th minute to make it 3-0.

McColl helped close out the scoring by threading the needle to Moctar Niang in the 72nd minute.

Chris Kingston posted his first collegiate shutout for Bowdoin, stopping two shots in the victory.

Bowdoin will host Amherst in its NESCAC opener on Saturday at noon.
