FALMOUTH — Nina’s Variety, known for its whoopie pies and its extensive sandwich menu, has closed.

Darcy Inness Sherr, president of the Falmouth/Cumberland Community Chamber of Commerce, this week called Nina’s “a landmark.” She said the closing is sad, but she’s also hopeful a new proprietor will take over the space.

Owner Nina Renock could not be reached for comment about why she closed the business  at the corner of Bucknam and Middle roads.

Town property records indicate Nina’s had been in business since at least 2001. A 2016 review on MaineToday.com described the shop as “perfect for picking up basic takeout on the way home.”

Writer Meredith Goad said Nina’s was the place to go if you wanted to “eat appetizing, fast (food that’s) easy on your budget.” She added the “menu here is huge … and nearly everything is well under $10.”

Town records indicate the building at 125 Bucknam Road was built in 1952.

Along with whoopie pies, Nina’s was also known for homemade cookies and allowing customers to make their own ice cream sandwiches.

Sherr said “it’s sad to see longtime small business owners pack it in; it’s literally losing a community member.”

“(The chamber) strives to uplift and help others in thriving, not just surviving,” she said, “and as the chamber president, a small business owner and community member myself, I am sad to see (Nina’s) go.”
