The calendar has flipped from September to October and the drama continues to rise.

By this time next week, the first champions of fall will be crowned and several other sports will be closer to locking in playoff participants.

Here’s a look at what occurred last week and what’s to come:

Football

Brunswick’s football team got back in the win column last Friday with a 47-12 home win over Mt. Blue to improve to 3-2 on the year. The Dragons (ranked second behind Skowhegan in the Class B North Heal Points standings at press time) will visit 2-3 Lawrence Friday night.

In Class B South, Mt. Ararat fell to 1-4 and eighth following a 42-14 loss at Noble last Friday. The Eagles are home against 3-2 Falmouth Saturday.

In Class C South, Morse improved to 3-2 last Friday with its third win in a row, 35-19, over visiting Yarmouth. The Shipbuilders (sixth in the region) travel to 2-3 York Friday.

Boys’ soccer

Mt. Ararat’s boys’ soccer team 8-1 and second to Lewiston in the Class A North Heals at press time following recent wins over visiting Hampden Academy (5-0), at Cony (2-0) and at home over Bangor (1-0, in double-overtime). The Eagles were at Morse Wednesday, go to Lewiston for a pivotal showdown Saturday and return home Tuesday of next week to meet Mt. Blue.

Brunswick was 3-4-2 and fifth after recent home shutout victories over Oxford Hills (9-0) and Skowhegan (5-0). The Dragons went to Lincoln Academy Wednesday, host Edward Little Friday and welcome Camden Hills Tuesday of next week.

Morse was 3-4-3 and sixth in Class B South after beating visiting Lincoln Academy (3-1) and tying visiting Leavitt (2-2). The Shipbuilders hosted Mt. Ararat Wednesday and go to Maranacook Tuesday of next week. 

Girls’ soccer

On the girls’ side, Brunswick was 8-0-1 and second to defending state champion Camden Hills in the Class A North Heals at press time entering Wednesday’s home game against Lincoln Academy. The Dragons last week blanked host Oxford Hills (5-0) and won at Skowhegan (3-1). After playing at Edward Little Friday, Brunswick has a showdown at undefeated Camden Hills Tuesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat was 4-5 and eighth following a 1-0 loss at Hampden Academy, a 3-0 home win over Cony and a 3-1 setback at Bangor in recent action. The Eagles hosted Morse Wednesday, welcome Lewiston Friday and travel to Mt. Blue Tuesday of next week.

In Class B South, Morse was 4-4-2 and sixth entering Wednesday’s contest at Mt. Ararat. The Shipbuilders beat Lincoln Academy (2-1) and lost at Leavitt (3-2) last week. Morse hosts Maranacook Tuesday of next week.

Field hockey

Mt. Ararat’s field hockey team was 7-5 and sixth in the Class A North Heals after an 8-0 home loss to three-time defending state champion Skowhegan, a 2-0 loss at Mt. Blue and a 3-0 win at Morse. The Eagles were home with Oxford Hills Thursday, then close the regular season at Brunswick Wednesday of next week.

Brunswick was 3-8 and 10th in Class A North at press time, but only eight teams make the playoffs in the region. The Dragons lost last week at Oxford Hills (4-2) and Cony (5-1) and beat visiting Hampden Academy (4-0). After hosting Lincoln Academy Tuesday, Brunswick traveled to Camden Hills Thursday and closes at home versus Mt. Ararat Wednesday of next week.

In Class B North, Morse was 5-7 and holding on to the 10th and final playoff spot following losses at Maranacook (1-0), Leavitt (6-1) and at home versus Mt. Ararat (3-0). The Shipbuilders hosted Waterville Thursday and close at Maine Central Institute Tuesday of next week.

Volleyball

The Brunswick/Mt. Ararat co-op volleyball team was 3-7 and 10th in the Class A Heals (10 teams make the playoffs) following a 3-0 home win over Lake Region, a five-set loss at Greely and a 3-2 victory at Gardiner. Brunswick/Mt. Ararat hosted Wells Tuesday and Gardiner Thursday.

Cross country

Brunswick’s boys’ cross country team finished ahead of 63 others to win the Festival of Champions Saturday in Belfast. The Dragons were led by Will Shaughnessy, who was third individually.

In the girls’ meet, won by Bonny Eagle, Brunswick placed 33rd. Margaret Chingos (96th) was the top individual.

Mt. Ararat hosted Morse, Gardiner and Oxford Hills last Friday. In the boys’ race, the Eagles were first behind individual champion Lisandro Berry-Gaviria and the Shipbuilders placed second. The teams finished in the same order on the girls’ side, as Mt. Ararat’s Camila Ciembroniewicz was first.

Golf

Mt. Ararat’s golf team qualified for Saturday’s Class A state match at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.

The individual state match will also beat at Natanis on Saturday, Oct. 13.
