Falmouth’s Sofie Matson races to a first-place finish in the Class A South girls’ cross country regional meet.

It was another dominant day for Forecaster Country runners at the cross country regional championship meet last Saturday at Twin Brook Recreational Center.

Just about every team from the coverage area qualified for next week’s state week and several individuals turned heads as well.

Class A

Falmouth’s girls’ team produced the Class A individual champion, Sofie Matson, who completed the five-kilometer course in 19 minutes, 22.73 seconds.

“I wasn’t feeling super great today,” Matson said. “I was cramping. I just thought about how states are more important, so this was just kind of a trial run.”

The Yachtsmen tallied 79 points as a team to finish runner-up to Bonny Eagle (47) and qualify for the state meet for the 15th year in a row. Also scoring for Falmouth were Karley Piers (third, 19:53.74), Malaika Pasch (11th, 20:32.07), Eva Clement (20th, 21:28) and Viviana Griffin (44th, 23:10.88).

Greely (199 points) came in eighth and also qualified for states for the 11th year in a row (nine of 18 teams made the cut). The Rangers were led by Marin Provencher (fifth, 20:13.17). Carolyn Todd was 16th (20:47.56), Julia Curran 18th (21:09.32), Elsa Dean-Muncie 69th (24:16.28) and Sophie Gustafson 91st (25:19.85).

In the Class A boys’ meet, won by Scarborough with 70 points, Falmouth (83) was second and Greely (96).

The Yachtsmen, who qualified for states for the 21st straight year, were led by John Auer, who placed fourth in 17:03.53. Also scoring were Ben Potter (ninth, 17:22.39), Faran Igani (21st, 17:57.96), Doug Cooke (22nd, 17:58.52) and Kade Kelley (27th, 18:00.06). 

The Rangers’ top finisher was Luke Marsanskis (fifth, 17:04.57). Matthew Todd was seventh (17:14.64). Also scoring were Riley Franklin (16th, 17:47.36), Jack Gustafson (33rd, 18:27.58) and Nicholas Giandrea (35th, 18:27.87). Greely made it five straight years qualifying for states.

Class B

In the Class B boys’ meet, won by York with 82 points (on a sixth-place runner tiebreaker over Cape Elizabeth), Freeport (84) was a very close third and Yarmouth (125) came in fifth.

The Falcons produced the individual champion in Martin Horne, who had a time of 16:56.11. Horne came on strong at the end to finish first.

“I was originally just going to try to stay with the leaders, but I felt good with a half mile to go, so I tried to pull away a little bit,” Horne said.

Also scoring for Freeport were Alex Les (13th, 18:05.96), Heath Cockburn (20th, 18:31.65), Paul Biberstein (23rd, 18:38.24) and Nick Mitch (27th, 18:42.01). The Falcons qualified for the state meet for the 10th consecutive season.

The Clippers’ top runner was Ben Cox-Faxon (sixth, 17:33.60). Also scoring were Odeh Rizkallah (14th, 18:08.13), Anders Corey (29th, 18:45.13), Justin Pietropaoli (36th, 19:17.40) and Daniel Lamourie (40th, 19:24.03). Yarmouth will make its fourth straight trip to states.

The Class B girls’ meet was won by York with 69 points. Yarmouth (89) was third and Freeport (115) came in fifth.

The Clippers were led by Maddie Marston, who came in eighth in 21:47.04. Also scoring were Abi Thornton (11th, 21:50.89), Sadie Cowles (14th, 22:03.32), Isabel Brennan (24th, 22:50.63) and Natalie Teare (32nd, 23:15.76). Yarmouth will go to states for the ninth successive season.

The Falcons featured individual runner-up Lily Horne (19:38.61). Also scoring were Elsa Blease (16th, 22:20.04), Allison Brown (26th, 22:51.56), Jane Dawson (34th, 23:17.55) and Emma Abbott (37th, 23:25.84). Freeport qualified for states for the fourth year in a row.

Class C

The Maine Coast Waldorf boys came in first in Class C South with 70 points. North Yarmouth Academy (162) was fifth and also qualified for states.

MCW was led by Matinicus Neveu, who was fifth individually in 18:20.01. Also scoring were Aiden Kusche (10th, 18:46.49), Finn Dierks-Brown (15th, 19:07.90), Max Waldron (17th, 19:09.99) and Wesley Teegarden (23rd, 19:38.38).

The Panthers’ top runner was Chris Hamblett (11th, 18:54.78). Also scoring were James Tourigny (19th, 19:12.73), Clement Deslisle-Blais (25th, 19:39.74), Noah Hallward-Rough (39th, 20:15.61) and Felix Lesperance (68th, 22:17.17). NYA made it to the state meet for the third year in a row.

In the Class C South girls’ meet, won by Maranacook with 50 points, MCW (54) was second and NYA didn’t score as a team.

MCW produced the individual champion in Olivia Reynolds (20:15.78). Also scoring were Mamie Whittier (ninth, 22:57.83), Ava Teegarden (11th, 23:02.62), Wilson Haims (13th, 23:24.06) and Nora Goldberg-Courtney (20th, 23:38.27).

NYA’s Emma Collins had the 33rd-best time (24:48.32). Lila Ojakaar was 59th (29:51.12). Sam Levasseur was 62nd (30:22.87) and Abby Xu placed 63rd (30:48.31).

Off to Belfast

Next up is the state meet in Belfast Saturday.

The Falmouth and Greely boys will run in the Class A race at 11 a.m. The Class A girls compete at 11:45. Freeport and Yarmouth will vie for Class B boys’ glory at 12:30 p.m. The Class B girls’ race is at 1:15. The MCW and NYA boys run in the Class C boys’ meet at 2 p.m. The Class C girls’ race begins at 2:45.
