Cape Elizabeth’s Lila Gaudrault won the Class B South girls’ race. The Capers were second as a team.

Local runners and teams turned heads at Saturday’s cross country regional championships at Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland.

Class A

Scarborough’s boys won the Class A South title, as their 70 points were 13 better than runner-up Falmouth. The Red Storm, who qualified for states for the 20th year in a row, were paced by individual runner-up Tristram Coffin, who completed the five-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 55.11 seconds. Also scoring were Zachary Barry (11th, 17:26.17), Harrison Osborne (12th, 17:30.75), Eric LoSacco (13th, 17:38.07) and William Ducott (32nd, 18:25.40).

“I think they all ran hard, but hopefully still left a little in the tank for next week,” Scarborough coach Jim Harmon said. “Next week is the one we really want to win.”

South Portland (339 points) finished 12th out of 18 teams, but didn’t qualify for states, as just nine teams made the cut. The Red Riots, who fell short for the second year in a row, were paced by Cliff Sennewald-Robbins, who came in 26th (18:00.03) and qualified as an individual. Also competing were Nicolas Borelli (34th, 18:27.68), Jacob Ramos (62nd, 19:03.16), Santana Garcia (108th, 20:44.78) and Thomas Vose (109th, 20:45.00).

In the Class A girls’ meet, won by Bonny Eagle with 47 points, Scarborough (264) came in 11th and South Portland (482) was 17th. Both teams failed to qualify for states.

The Red Storm, who fell short of the state meet for the second year in a row, did qualify an individual, freshman Kayla Werner, who was 10th in 20:29.01. Other scorers included Olivia Desjardins (55th, 23:26.82), Lena Wood (59th, 23:35.59), Sydney Bloom (68th, 24:11.63) and Isabella Cook (72nd, 24:21.90).

The Red Riots’ scorers were Eileen Porterfield (71st, 24:21.24), Isabella Carrier (90th, 25:16.42), Rachel Kingsley (92nd, 25:20.00), Autumn Gervais (111th, 26:43.32) and Marina Brandao (118th, 29:14.79). South Portland fell short of the state meet for the third straight season.

Class B

Cape Elizabeth did very well at the Class B meet, as both the boys and girls qualified for states.

Lila Gaudrault won the girls’ race in 19:34.77 to help the Capers to a second-place finish behind York (69 points to 73). Also scoring were Camilla Grosso (third, 20:59.93), Kelsey Kennedy (ninth, 21:48.15), Zoe Evans (19th, 22:23.37) and Eva Morris (41st, 23:38.34). The Capers made it 18 straight state meet berths.

In the boys’ meet, Cape Elizabeth and York tied with 82 points, but the Wildcats were awarded the win on the sixth-runner tiebreaker. The Capers were led by Jack Bassett (second, 17:02.35). Also scoring were Peter DiNinno (seventh, 17;36.30), Ricky Perruzzi (17th, 18:23.05), Aidan Willitts (21st, 18:32.22) and Vaughan Lindenau (35th, 19:08.72). Cape Elizabeth qualified for the state meet for the 17th consecutive season.

Off to Belfast

Next up is the state meet in Belfast Saturday.

Scarborough will run in the Class A boys race at 11 a.m. Cape Elizabeth’s boys will vie for Class B honors at 12:30 p.m. The Capers girls run at 1:15 p.m.
