Cape Elizabeth’s girls’ soccer team relished in showing off its newly won hardware.

Lydia Grant was a top player for a South Portland field hockey team that played in many close games this fall.

Connor Coffin and his Scarborough boys’ cross country teammates won another Class A championship last month.

The 2018 fall sports season once again was one of triumph and making memories.

Local teams impressed across the board.

Scarborough’s football team wasn’t able to defend its Class A state title, losing to eventual champion Thornton Academy in the regional final. Cape Elizabeth made it to the Class C South semifinals before falling at Leavitt.

The soccer pitch saw high drama, as the Cape Elizabeth girls went undefeated and won the Class B title, while Scarborough got back to the Class A state game, where again, the Red Storm lost by a goal to Camden Hills.

On the boys’ side, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough and South Portland qualified for the postseason. the Red Riots and Red Storm fell in the quarterfinals, while the Capers got to the regional final, ending Yarmouth’s four-year title reign in the process.

Scarborough’s perennially strong field hockey team again got to the semifinals.

Cape Elizabeth’s volleyball team wasn’t able to repeat in Class B, losing in a five-set classic to Yarmouth in the state match. Scarborough and South Portland also made the playoffs.

Cross country saw the Scarborough boys win another Class A team title, while a Cape Elizabeth individual won the Class B girls’ crown.

Another Cape Elizabeth individual was able to repeat as the Class B golf individual champion.

5) Cape golfer repeats as individual champ

Cape Elizabeth golf standout Austin Legge added to his legacy back in October, when he rallied to win the Class B boys’ individual title with an 18-hole round of 69. In the process, Legge became the first player in the Capers’ storied history to win individual titles in consecutive years.

4) Another cross country crown for Scarborough boys

Scarborough’s boys’ cross country team has been a model of excellence for well over a decade and last month, the Red Storm left the Class A field in their wake to win a championship for the ninth time in 15 seasons. Scarborough got strong performances from Tristram Coffin, Connor Coffin, Zachary Barry, Eric LoSacco and Harrison Osborne to finish well ahead of runner-up Bangor.

3) Cape volleyball comes up one set short

Cape Elizabeth’s volleyball team produced another memorable season, stretching its two-year win streak to 28 before losing to eventual Class A champion Falmouth. The Capers earned the top seed for the Class B tournament and after downing Kennebunk and York, advanced to the state match for the third time and went up against a Yarmouth squad they beat during the regular season. This time, the Clippers won the first two sets, but as it so often does, Cape Elizabeth answered and forced a winner-take-all fifth set. The magic ran out there, however, and Yarmouth captured the championship.

2) Cape boys finally solve Yarmouth

Cape Elizabeth’s boys’ soccer team didn’t manage to win the Class B state title this year, but the Capers might have had the most impactful victory. After losing two close games to four-time defending champion Yarmouth during the regular season, Cape Elizabeth got another shot at the top-ranked Clippers in the semifinals. Early goals from Archie McEvoy and Phil Tarling set the tone and the Capers held on to prevail, 2-1. Cape Elizabeth lost a 3-2 heartbreaker at Freeport in the regional final, but the win over Yarmouth highlighted the program’s best season in 16 years.

1) Cape girls go OT to win Gold Ball

Cape Elizabeth’s girls’ soccer team was the preseason favorite and 18 victories and no losses later, the Capers celebrated a state title, but it didn’t come easily. Facing Presque Isle in the Class B Final, Cape Elizabeth hit the crossbar four separate times in the first half, then fell behind early in the second half, but Karli Chapin tied the score late and in overtime, Chapin scored the biggest goal of her life to give the Capers a 2-1 victory, capping a truly sensational season.
