LEBANON — Maine Connections Academy (MCA), the state’s first virtual public charter school, has selected Taylor Church, an eighth-grader from Lebanon, as its November 2018 STAR Student of the Month.

Before she came to MCA, Taylor had been homeschooled and studied in public and private schools, but she wanted more challenging coursework.

“I like to do a lot of math,” Church said.

She said she was looking particularly for a more demanding mathematics curriculum.

At MCA she is currently studying square roots and angles, and in her words, “it’s hard!”

Because MCA is a distance-learning school, Taylor takes all of her classes online. Besides math, she also enjoys language arts:

“I love to write stories all the time,” she said.

Her favorite teachers are Mrs. Harvey, Ms. Bessey and Mr. Hoskins.

Outside of school, Church plays basketball (“I love to do sports”) at Noble High School in North Berwick.

With her family, Church volunteers on a regular basis at a soup kitchen at a local church and she’s also a baker.

“I like to bake a lot, especially cookies and cakes,” she said.

Her many accomplishments are impressive for an eighth-grader, and they made her a natural selection for the Maine Connections Academy November 2018 STAR Student of the Month.
