TEIGAN LINDSTEDT, Senior-Football

  • Class A North first-team, linebacker

  • Captain

Lindstedt was a two-way force for a Cheverus squad which extended its streak of winning seasons and playoff berths.

Lindstedt started playing football in the fifth grade in Gray-New Gloucester. He came to Cheverus for his freshman year and first made a big impact on the varsity football team his junior season, as a running back and a linebacker.

This fall, Lindstedt, as a captain, was a major part of the offense and contributed some big plays on the defensive end as well, as his play and character earned respect from peers and adults alike.

Lindstedt scored Cheverus’ first touchdown of the season, on a 72-yard run at Massabesic, and added another in a 43-6 victory. Lindstedt’s 27-yard TD run spelled the difference in a 19-13 victory over Lewiston in a game he rushed for 122 yards. He finished with 125 yards in a loss to Oxford Hills, ran for two touchdowns and returned an interception for another in a victory at Edward Little and scored twice and ran for over 100 yards in a win over Windham.

Lindstedt finished the regular season with 897 yards and eight TDs on 107 carries. Defensively, he had 56 tackles (fifth in the region), two interceptions and a sack.

In the playoffs. Lindstedt scored a pair of touchdowns in a quarterfinal round victory over Bangor. The Stags, who won seven games, were then ousted by Oxford Hills in the semifinals.

“I’m really happy with how the team played,” said Lindstedt. “I knew we had it in us. I loved every minute of it. I love the competitive spirit and the team part of football. You can’t have one or two guys carry you. (Fellow captain) Vic (Marrone) motivated me and so did my coaches and teammates.”

Lindstedt is wrestling at 182 pounds this winter. His goal is to not be pinned and to make it to New Englands, something he just missed out on a year ago. He plans to play lacrosse for the first time this spring. Lindstedt, who is also very involved with Cheverus retreats, plans to attend and play football next year at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, where he will study Marine Engineering Operations.

Teigan Lindstedt, Cheverus’ Fall Male Athlete of the Year, lived up to the student-athlete ideal and has much to look forward to.

Coach Mike Vance’s comment: “Teigan was the heartbeat of our team. He’s a tough competitor. Very mature. We relied on him to make big plays on both sides of the ball and to demonstrate competitive focus for our less experienced players. He was a leader in every sense of the word.”

SOPHIA POMPEO, Senior-Field hockey

  • All-state

  • SMAA all-star, first-team

  • Faith Littlefield Award winner

  • Captain

Pompeo created thrills galore for her teammates and nightmares for the opposition, as every time she had the ball on her stick, she was capable of making magic and her stellar play led the Stags to the playoffs and left her on the short list of the greatest players in program history.

Pompeo started playing field hockey in middle school and it wasn’t long before she emerged as a special talent.

“I loved (field hockey) right away,” Pompeo said. “It was easy to pick up because I played ice hockey before. I’m in my own world when I play.”

Pompeo mastered her unrivaled stick-work over the years, but it came at a cost.

“Every night, I play in my room and my wood floors are destroyed,” Pompeo said.

Pompeo first made her mark on the Cheverus varsity as a freshman when she was named to the league all-star team after helping the Stags reach the Class A South Final. As a sophomore, Pompeo was again named an all-star as she played an even bigger role on the team. In 2017, Pompeo was joined by her sister, Lucia Pompeo, led Cheverus to the playoffs and was named all-state. This fall, she was at her best in the biggest spots.

Pompeo assisted on the lone goal in a season-opening win over Kennebunk, had a goal in a win over eventual semifinalist Falmouth and scored three times in a victory over Deering.

Her finest hour came in the regional preliminary round, when the Stags outlasted Massabesic in an overtime thriller. In that one, Pompeo scored on a penalty stroke early, eluded the entire Mustangs’ defense to produce a second, then, with the season on the line, she converted another penalty stroke to complete her hat trick.

Cheverus then was ousted by Scarborough in the quarterfinals.

“I’m just glad I could play for a program like Cheverus,” said Pompeo, who wound up with 12 goals and six assists. “Everyone was so supportive of each other. I had great coaches and I’m really going to miss it.”

Pompeo, who also plays ice hockey and runs track at Cheverus, will next take her field hockey talents to Providence College, where she plans to study business.

Sophia Pompeo, Cheverus’ Fall Female Athlete of the Year, left quite a mark on one of the region’s perennial powers. Her ability to handle the ball without peer and score big goals ensures she’ll live on in program lore.

Coach Sally Cloutier’s comment: “Fortunately for us, Sophia was just a great player. She’s strong, confident, poised and mature. She practiced tirelessly and executed. She’s a great kid. I’m really proud of all that she did for our program. She’ll be missed.”
