SCARBOROUGH — Hospice of Southern Maine is gearing up to launch a $4.5 million Home Hospice Care capital campaign to support plans for a 15,000-square-foot center at 390 Route 1.

The new space is expected to cost almost $5.8 million and will replace buildings HSM has been leasing at 136 and 180 Route 1.

HSM cares for more than 1,600 patients annually either in their homes, the patient’s care facility, or Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, an 18-bed inpatient facility at 11 Hunnewell Road.

According to a news release, HSM is in the “quiet or planning phase” of the campaign, but already received a $150,000 donation from Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution and Biddeford-based P&C Insurance to support the campaign.

Construction is expected to begin in May, coinciding with the public kickoff of the Home Hospice Care Campaign.

Once finished, the center will serve as the central hub for clinical teams that visit approximately 200 patients daily, most of whom reside at home. Chief Executive Officer Daryl Cady said it will also house a clinical access department, family bereavement suite, hospice learning center, and community resource center.
