AUGUSTA — Gov.-elect Janet Mills on Wednesday said she will nominate Brunswick Assistant Superintendent of Schools Pender Makin to serve as the next commissioner of the Maine Department of Education.

Makin has been the assistant chief of the Brunswick School Department since 2015.

From 1997-2003, Makin was a classroom teacher at Fred C. Wescott Junior High School in Westbrook. She went on to became principal at The REAL (Regional Education Alternative Learning) School on Mackworth Island in Falmouth from 2003-2015, where she was named Maine Principal of the Year.
