WATERBORO — A 10-month-old baby was taken by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland early Thursday after a box track slammed into the back of the Jeep the child’s mother was driving on Route 202 in south Waterboro.

Ellen Kennedy, 37, of Sanford was driving east on Route 202 and had stopped in traffic to make a left-hand turn onto Straw Mill Road when her 2004 Jeep Cherokee was struck from behind by a 26-foot, 2019 Freightliner box truck at about 6:30 a.m.

York County Sheriff William L. King Jr, said the child sustained serious injuries.

After consultation with the York County District Attorney’s Office, the driver of the truck, Rene Romero, 53, of Lynn, Massachusetts, was arrested and charged with aggravated driving to endanger, a Class C felony. He is being held at York County Jail on $10,000 cash bail and is scheduled for arraignment at 1 p.m. Friday at Biddeford District Court by video from the Alfred jail, the sheriff said

The child’s mother and Romero were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The crash is being re-constructed by deputies from the York County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by Sanford Police.

Portions of Route 202 were closed for approximately seven hours on Thursday.

The child was traveling in a child safety seat.

King said the investigation is continuing.
