While the basketball tournament (see story) will garner plenty of attention in the days to come, just about every other winter sport is in the process of determining champions as well.

Last week saw conference and regional champions crowned and there’s plenty of hardware still to come.

Here’s a glimpse:

Girls’ hockey

Scarborough’s girls’ hockey team, despite a roster which features 13 freshmen, found itself preparing for the South Region Final at press time. The Red Storm, after a 13-4-1 regular season, earned the No. 2 seed and last Friday, defeated third-ranked Falmouth, 5-2.

Courtney Brochu’s power play goal gave Scarborough a 1-0 lead after one period. After Taylor Veilleux doubled the advantage, the Yachtsmen got a goal back to keep things very interesting heading for the third period. There, Evelyn Boardman scored a highlight reel goal, Maya Sellinger added another and after Falmouth pulled within 4-2, Brochu’s empty netter clinched it.

“The third period isn’t really our best period,” Brochu said. “We knew they’d come strong and we knew we had to come out stronger. We knew we’d win anyways if we kept that (2-1) score, but we just kept the momentum going.”

“We just have to come out on fire like we did today,” said Boardman. “If we get goals, we’ll keep the momentum up.”

“It feels great,” added Red Storm coach Caitlin Jordan. “I couldn’t be more proud of how the girls came out and played. In a playoff game, playing from ahead is so important.” 

Scarborough was scheduled to face top-ranked, defending regional champion Cheverus/Kennebunk (16-2-1) in the regional final Wednesday in Lewiston, but the game was moved to Thursday due to bad weather. Cheverus/Kennebunk won both regular season meetings, 2-0 on the road and 3-0 at home. The Red Storm are 1-2 all-time in the playoffs versus Cheverus/Kennebunk, with a 4-0 loss in last year’s semifinals the most recent.

If Scarborough reaches the state final, it will face either Lewiston (19-0) or St. Dom’s (14-4-2) Saturday in Lewiston. The Red Storm lost twice to the Blue Devils, 2-0 on the road and 4-0 at home this year, but beat them in the lone prior playoff encounter, 3-1, in the 2014 state final. Scarborough settled for a 4-4 home tie against the Saints in the team’s only meeting this winter. In the only prior playoff encounter, the Red Storm lost, 2-1, in the 2016 state final.

The Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete/South Portland co-op team, the No. 4 seed in the South Region, defeated No. 5 York/Traip/Marshwood, 2-0, in last Wednesday’s quarterfinals (Sophia Venditti had both goals), then gave top-ranked Cheverus/Kennebunk a mighty scare in the semifinals Saturday before losing, 1-0, in double-overtime to finish the year 10-10. Goalie Katherine Blackburn made 20 saves, but the offense couldn’t get the puck in the net.

“Probably the best game we’ve played all season,” Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete/South Portland coach Bob Mills said. “It could have gone either way. A great game.”

Indoor track

The Southwestern Maine Activities Association indoor track championship meet was held Saturday in Gorham.

Scarborough’s boys prevailed yet again, tallying 216 points to finish a whopping 120 points ahead of runner-up Falmouth. The Red Storm got wins from Jayden Flaker in the junior 55 hurdles (7.94 seconds), Jarett Flaker in the senior 55 (6.48), senior 200 (22.49) and senior 400 (50.45), Anthony Clavette in the senior high jump (6 feet, 4 inches), Ben Hatch in the senior long jump (21-6.5), Noah Drapeau in the open 600 (1 minute, 17.12 seconds) and their open 4×200 (1:34.43) and open 4×800 (8:39.79) relay teams.

South Portland (25.5 points) finished 12th.

In the girls’ meet, won by Thornton Academy with 110.5 points, Scarborough (73.5) was sixth. The Red Storm got wins from Emily Labbe in the senior 55 hurdles (8.43) and senior 200 (27.22) and Anna Gardner in the open pole vault (10-1).

South Portland (37) placed 11th and got a first-place performance from Rebekah Hunnewell-Dunphe in the senior shot put (36-8.25).

At the Western Maine Conference championship meet, also held in Gorham last Friday, the Cape Elizabeth girls tallied 44 points to place sixth (York was first with 156). Darcy Cochran won the senior 55 hurdles (8.76). 

In the boys’ meet, won by York with 228 points, Cape Elizabeth (30) was ninth. Keegan O’Grady was first in the junior 400 (56.82). 

Next up are the Class B state meet Saturday in Lewiston and the Class A state meet Monday in Gorham. 

Swimming

The swimming North Division Southwesterns championship meet was contested last weekend in Cape Elizabeth.

Cape Elizabeth’s girls’ team finished first by scoring 365 points, 74 more than runner-up Greely. The Capers got wins from Caroline Mahoney in the 100 backstroke (56.89 seconds) and the 200 freestyle (1 minute, 54.65 seconds), Olivia Tighe in the 200 individual medley (2:08.24) and the 100 butterfly (58.43), Hope Campbell in the 50 free (25.18), Alicia Lawrence in the 100 free (55.10), Ali Bragg in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.19) and their 200 medley (Mahoney, Bragg, Tighe and Lawrence, 1:50.45) and 200 freestyle (Campbell, Emma Frothingham, Avery Palma and Jade Lindenau, 1:45.03) relay teams.

South Portland (127) came in fifth and Scarborough (81) placed eighth

In the boys’ meet, won by Cheverus with 294 points, South Portland (175) finished third, Scarborough (172) placed fourth and Cape Elizabeth (167) was fifth.

The Capers got a win from Ethan Smith in the 100 fly (52.8). 

The Red Storm’s 400 freestyle relay team (Sam Curtis, Andrew Pillsbury, Finn Davis and Gavin McLeod) came in first in 3:30.14.

The Class B boys’ state meet will be held Saturday at the University of Maine in Orono. The Class B girls’ meet is Monday of next week at UMO, while the Class A boys’ meet is the same day at Bowdoin College in Brunswick. The Class A girls’ state meet is next Tuesday in Brunswick.

Skiing

The Cape Elizabeth boys won the WMC Alpine ski title last week. Killian Lathrop was the champion of the slalom with a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 29.45 seconds. 

The skiing state meets begin later this week.

Wrestling

The wrestling Class A South regional championship meet was held last weekend in North Berwick where Scarborough tallied 69 points to place 10th (Noble was first with 205 points).

The Red Storm had two individual champions, as Elijah Holbrook took first in the 145 pound weight class and Addison Boisvert took first in the heavyweight division.

The Class A state match is Saturday in Augusta.

Boys’ hockey

The South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete co-op boys’ hockey squad has stolen headlines of late.

The Red Riots improved to 9-6 and third in the Class A South Heal Points standings after an historic 5-1 win at two-time defending Class A state champion Lewiston and home victories over Thornton Academy (3-1) and Marshwood (10-2) last week.

In the program’s first-ever win over the Blue Devils, Gus Lappin scored a hat trick, while Dylan Houle and Eric Walker also scored and goalie Liam McGibbon stopped 24 shots.

“The win against Lewiston means a great deal to the program,” said Red Riots coach Joe Robinson. “This program has never beaten Lewiston in its entire history. As a coach, I’ve been waiting for the day when we could get them on our schedule and compete with them. As a coach you always want to play the best because it validates all of the hard work you and your staff and the team has put in over the years. Even though this win over Lewiston is not a playoff game, it shows everyone, most importantly ourselves, that our program is moving in the right direction. It gives the younger kids in the community the hope that one day maybe they will be part of a program that can compete with the best night in and night out, which is something to strive for and really be proud of.”

Against Marshwood, Lappin had another hat trick and Ben Musgrove scored twice. After hosting defending Class A South champion Biddeford Wednesday, SP/Freeport/Waynflete plays at Scarborough Saturday, then closes at Massabesic Thursday of next week.

“Right now, the team is really clicking at the right time,” Robinson said. “I know we’re looking forward to finishing up the season and seeing what we can do in the tournament. It should be fun.”

Scarborough was 8-6-1 and fifth in Class A South at press time after sandwiching wins at Cheverus (5-0) and Marshwood (6-2) around a 5-1 home win over Lake Region. Against the Stags, a hat trick from Nolan Matthews helped snap a four-game skid.

“It was only a one-goal game (at the start of the third period) and I knew I had to put the puck in,” Matthews said. “I was just in the right spot and won some battles. It was awesome to get a hat trick.”

Matthews and Jacob Brown each scored twice against the Hawks. Scarborough hosts South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete in a pivotal contest Saturday, welcomes Portland/Deering Monday and closes at Portland/Deering Thursday of next week.

In Class B South, Cape Elizabeth remains second behind defending regional champion Greely at 11-4 following a 4-3 overtime home loss to Portland/Deering and a 5-3 victory at Gardiner. Phil Tarling had two goals in the loss. In the win, Tarling finished with a hat trick. The Capers welcomed Brunswick Thursday, play host to Greely Saturday, then close at Yarmouth Monday.
