FALMOUTH —  Two town police officers were honored by the Maine Chiefs of Police Association for saving a life.

The life Kurt Fegan and Colin Gordan saved happened to be that of a retired police officer, although they didn’t know it at the time.

“Response is (always) the same no matter who needs our help,” the Police Department said in a Facebook post announcing the awards.

According to Chief John Kilbride, on May 21, 2018, the two officers responded to an early morning call about a 50-year-old man in cardiac arrest and not breathing.

He said Gordan is a trained emergency medical technician who supplied “advanced medical care” to the man in distress and that both officers were key in administering CPR and providing crucial early intervention.

“If these officers hadn’t taken the steps they did that day, (the patient) would not have made it,” Kilbride said.

He said Fegan and Gordan were able to respond to the 911 call faster than an ambulance crew because they were already out on patrol.

He described the call as being within the everyday scope of what police officers in Falmouth do each time they’re out on patrol.

“Our officers do incredible work every day to keep the community safe,” Kilbride said.

But, he added, it is important to “recognize outstanding effort” and said it means a lot to the Police Department to have its officers honored by the Maine Chiefs of Police.

Police officers don’t seek recognition for doing their jobs, the Facebook post added.

But it is important “when you can be reminded of the impact you make in others lives,” the post said. “Well done gentlemen. Very well done.”
