Brunswick’s boys’ hockey team was the last local squad remaining in the postseason and despite a valiant effort, the Dragons’ season came to a close last Friday.

Brunswick, seeded sixth in Class B South after a .500 regular season, upset No. 3 York, 6-4, in the quarterfinals, then went to Lewiston to face second-ranked Cape Elizabeth in the semifinals and the Dragons gave the Capers a mighty scare before losing, 6-4.

Brunswick trailed, 3-1, after one period, pulled even at 3-3, then after falling behind 4-3, tied the game again on Jacob Doring’s second goal of the contest, but Cape Elizabeth got a goal with 1:48 to play, then added an empty-netter to end the Dragons’ season at 10-10.

“We worked really hard, every one of us,” said Doring. “To be a six seed, to upset a three seed then battle a two seed, it was a great effort. I am so proud of these guys.”

“The York game was huge for us, to the point that it makes you feel like you’re in the game no matter the score,” Brunswick coach Mike Misner said. “Tonight, we were down, but we still felt we were in this game. We look back, that with 20 seconds left in this game and down two, we felt that we were still in this game after scoring two goals against York in 15 seconds. We just didn’t have the legs, not having the numbers, and we just ran out of gas there. We faced adversity all year, one goalie, no backup, two lines. They just worked really hard.”

Jack St. Pierre and Isaac Burtis also scored for the Dragons and Spencer Marquis made 19 saves.

The Mt. Ararat/Morse/Hyde/Lisbon co-op team, ranked fifth in Class A North, pushed No. 4 Edward Little to the limit in its quarterfinal, but lost, 2-1, in overtime, to finish 8-10-1. Cam Poisson scored to tie the game with 1.5 seconds left in regulation and freshman goalie Sean Moore made a whopping 42 saves, but it wasn’t enough.

“The kids fought so hard to the very last second,” said Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse/Hyde coach A.J. Kavanaugh. “Sean was able to play well in a big game and get that experience, Sean stepped in when (senior) Cade Charron, a four-year starter in goal for us, saw something on defense, and we knew moving him there was the right thing. Sean stepped in, and against Lewiston in early January he had 55 saves. We knew right away we made the right decision.”

New England track results

Several indoor track athletes from Brunswick and Mt. Ararat took part in the New England championship meet Saturday in Boston.

Brunswick’s Mitchell Lienert was the top finisher, placing 12th in the boys’ 300 (35.92 seconds). Lienert was also 22nd in the 55 preliminary (6.82). Samuel Cenescar placed 13th in the high jump (6-feet, 1 inch). Will Shaughnessy was 15th in the two-mile (9:56.76). Tyler Patterson came in 18th in the mile (4:32.67). The Dragons’ 4×800 relay team (Daniel Lyons, Aiden Simmons, Andrew Chingos and Joey Valliere) placed 22nd (8:45.80). The 4×200 relay squad (Jack Harvey, Josh Musica, Hunter Parker and Lienert) did not finish.

Mt. Ararat’s Tyler Bernier was 19th in the 600 (1:27.71). Hunter Lohr placed 20th in the 600 (1:27.9). Grady Satterfield came in 20th in the two-mile (10:21.53). The Eagles’ 4×200 relay team (Cameron Orr, Bernier, Ethan Rac and Maximo Varela) finished 23rd (1:37.47). On the girls’ side, the Eagles got a 20th-place showing from their 4×200 relay team (Mikaela Langston, Katie Lynch, Sarah York and Wyley Fitzpatrick, 1:50.29). Lynch finished 21st in the 300 (44.7) and Fitzpatrick finished 24th in the long jump (16-5).
