SOUTH PORTLAND — A city man is in Cumberland County Jail facing two drug-related charges following the overdose death of another man.

Stephen Lynch, 30, was arrested March 2 on charges of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs and unlawful trafficking of scheduled drugs, specifically the synthetic opioid fentanyl, Police Lt. Frank Clark said in a news release Thursday.

According to Cumberland County Jail intake logs, Lynch was arrested on Market Street, but lists his address as 34 Knox Road in Shapleigh. Clark said he is being held on $60,000 bail.

The arrest came after police were called to another city home where a 28-year-old male was found dead by his family. Police have not released the name or address of the man, but Clark said items found at the scene indicated there had been an overdose.

Further investigation that included a search warrant executed at a separate residence led police to charge Lynch. Clark said police have identified the person suspected of supplying the overdose victim with the drugs, but the matter remains under investigation.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has not yet ruled on the cause of death, Clark added.

Fentanyl is found to be a leading factor in overdose deaths in Maine. Clark said it was the third fatal overdose in South Portland this year. He also asked anyone concerned about someone with a substance use disorder to call Dana Baldwin, the police department’s civilian clinical liaison, at 799-5511, ext. 7237, for help.
