Joan Benoit Samuelson plans to run the Boston Marathon next month.

The Boston Athletic Association says the two-time champion and Olympic gold medalist will be in the field on April 15.

Benoit Samuelson, who lives in Freeport, was a 21-year-old Bowdoin College student in 1979 when she set an American marathon record and a women’s course record. She finished in 2 hours, 35 minutes, 15 seconds, wearing a Red Sox cap.

She returned in 1983 to set a world best of 2:22:43. She won the first Olympic women’s marathon at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

Benoit Samuelson says her goal next month is to run within 40 minutes of the time she clocked in her Boston debut 40 years ago.

She last ran the Boston Marathon in 2015.

AUTO RACING

CUP SERIES: Austin Dillon won the pole for Sunday’s race at Fontana, California, after no drivers completed a lap in the final round of qualifying.

Dillon got his fourth career pole essentially by default after a bizarre scene in the final session. With all 12 final-round drivers determined to go out as late as possible in a drafting group, everyone waited to start until roughly 44 seconds remained in the session. Nobody made it to the line before time ran out.

Dillon won each of the two rounds of qualifying. Kevin Harvick will start second, followed by Aric Almirola and Kyle Busch.

SOCCER

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Manchester United and Barcelona have been drawn to play each other in the quarterfinals.

Four English teams reached the last eight, and two – Tottenham and Manchester City – will meet in the next round. The other quarterfinals: Liverpool vs. Porto and Ajax vs. Juventus.

LAWSUIT: U.S. Soccer Federation President Carlos Cordeiro says the governing body was surprised when women’s national team players sued alleging gender discrimination.

Cordeiro said in a statement that the USSF is reviewing the suit, and he has spoken with some of the players this week and hopes for continued conversation.

The USSF and the team agreed in April 2017 to a collective bargaining agreement through 2021 that gave the players higher pay and better benefits. Cordeiro say the players had not expressed concerns with the labor contract since then.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Video review has been approved for this year’s tournament, which runs from June 7 to July 7 in France.
