SPRINGVALE — Garden beds are still available in the Sanford Community Garden, and the deadline for accepting applications has been extended to April 5.

Four of the beds are available to low income people, and the $25 membership fee has been waived for those beds, said Bud Johnston, president of the Mousam Way Land Trust. The land trust is establishing the 24-bed garden on the McKeon Reserve at the Pence Community Ecology Center on Blanchard Road in Springvale.

“Tending plants in one of these beds would be a great experience for families with children,” said Johnston. “It would get them outdoors for a healthy activity and let them see how food is grown. Then there is the sense of pride when the harvest is brought home.“

Johnston said applicants do not have to know anything about gardening. Master Gardener volunteers and land trust members, at scheduled times, will provide the necessary information and advice. As well, nutritional information about vegetables and how to use herbs in meal preparation will be provided.

Descriptive brochures with application forms are available at Springvale Library, Goodall Library, Springvale Hardware, Shaw’s Hardware, York County Credit Union branches and at: mousamwaylandtrust.org.
