Boisvert spent his junior season on the junior varsity team, but as senior, he had no peer in his weight class and will graduate as a state champion.

Boisvert has devoted much of his life to wrestling, a sport he started in middle school.

“I tried every other sport before wrestling, then my Dad wanted me to try it and I went to the youth program and I ended up loving it,” Boisvert said. “I like how you have to rely on yourself. If you’re not doing well, you just have to get better.”

Boisvert personified that quest in high school, as he was a relative unknown (as unknown as a talent of his stature can be) entering the season, but it wasn’t long until the sky was the limit.

Boisvert started the season winning the Westbrook Invitational.

“I used what I learned last year and when I wrestled one of the best guys in the state early in the season and won, I thought it would be a good season,” Boisvert said.

He was runner-up at the Spartan Invitational and in the postseason, really turned heads, winning the 285 pound championship at the regional meet, then capturing the Class A state crown as well, pinning Erskine Academy’s Anthony Sanborn in the final, becoming just the third champion in program history (joining Mike Cyr and Jeremy Sendrowski).

Boisvert then lost in the final of the New England qualifier.

“I was very happy with my season,” Boisvert said. “I trained a lot and listened to my coaches.”

Boisvert has devoted a lot of time to Crossfit training and he hopes to go on and wrestle at the Division II level where he plans to study history and English.

Addison Boisvert, Scarborough’s Winter Male Athlete of the Year, epitomized saving the best for last. He had a senior season to remember and we haven’t heard the last of his exploits.

Coach Shane Stephenson’s comment: “Addison is an epic story of hard work paying off. He progressed so much. He really wanted to win and he set his mind to it. He surprised everybody. He’s why coaches coach. This doesn’t happen often. He had an amazing year.”

Couture was the heart-and-soul of a team which surprised many in February, reaching the state final.

Couture has played basketball since she was a young girl and while she also played soccer at Scarborough, her ability to make big plays on both ends of floor allowed her to stand out.

“I enjoy the team dynamic of basketball,” said Couture, who played four years on the varsity team. “I’m a competitive person and it’s great playing with some amazing girls.”

Couture became a captain as a junior and served in that role again this winter, when she averaged 8.0 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.9 steals.

“Being a captain was important to me,” Couture said. “Sophie Glidden was a great leader and I wanted to fill that role and give others someone to depend on.”

She certainly did.

Couture’s highlights included 21 points in a win at Bonny Eagle, 13 in an eye-opening victory at three-time defending Class AA South champion Gorham, 12 points in a win over Noble, 11 points in a victory over Deering, 11 points in a second win over Gorham and 10 points in a regular season-closing victory over Thornton Academy.

Couture then came up clutch on multiple occasions in the tournament, helping hold Gorham standout Mackenzie Holmes in check, while producing 10 points, four steals and three offensive rebounds in a semifinal round victory, grabbing five rebounds in a regional final upset win over South Portland and scoring 14 points and adding four rebounds in the state game loss to Edward Little.

“We had a great run,” Couture said. “No one expected us to make it that far. Beyond our success, we were a close team and had a lot of fun. We had a great team dynamic and always stayed together.”

Couture, who played AAU basketball with the Firecrackers program, belongs to Scarborough’s Interact Club and enjoys working with younger players. She’s undecided on her college choice and believes she’s done playing competitively.

Josie Couture, Scarborough’s Winter Female Athlete of the Year, made her mark in her time in a Red Storm uniform, especially this past season, when she did a little of everything to help her team enjoy an unforgettable campaign.

Coach Mike Giordano’s comment: “ Josie was the glue for our team. Offense, defense and leadership she was most outstanding. She was a four-year starter and when we needed a basket, she took it to the hoop. I’m so proud of her and what she accomplished.”
