PORTLAND — Police are investigating an alleged attempted robbery Tuesday, April 2, that was foiled when the victim fired shots at the suspect.

Lt. Robert Martin said the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. outside Anania’s variety store at 606 Washington Ave. in East Deering.

Martin said a 26-year-old man reported he was in the driver’s seat of his car when the suspect opened a passenger door and gestured as though he had a gun concealed inside his sweatshirt.

The suspect fled on foot toward Ocean Avenue when the driver drew his own concealed weapon, Martin said. The victim gave chase and fired two shots; no injuries were reported.

Police are searching for a black male in his early 20s, described as 6 feet tall and 160 pounds. Martin said he was wearing dark jeans, a black and green camo hoodie, and a black neoprene face mask.

“Police do not recommend people responding to robberies in this way,” Martin added, saying they suggest complying with demands while trying to get a good description of the suspect before calling 911.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call 874-8532 or 874-8575. Anonymous tips can also be made at https://portland-police.com by clicking “Submit an Anonymous Crime Tip,” or by text at 274637 using the keyword GOTCHA.
