The spring sports season has gotten off to a slow start for local teams, due to questionable weather and field conditions, but many squads have kicked off their 2019 campaign and early results have been promising.

Here’s a recap:

Baseball

Cheverus’ baseball team, a regional finalist each of the past two years, started its season last Thursday with a 7-2 victory at Marshwood. Jack Mullen earned the win, John Welch had three hits and Nathaniel Lapoint had a two-run single. The Stags hosted Noble in their home opener Tuesday, go to Gorham for a regional final rematch Thursday and welcome Massabesic Tuesday of next week.

Deering started with a 20-4 (five-inning) home loss to Marshwood, then lost a 17-9 slugfest at Noble. Against the Hawks, Tre Fletcher had two hits and scored two runs, but Rams’ pitchers walked 15 batters and threw 13 wild pitches.

“We gave (Marshwood) multiple baserunners and extra outs and you won’t beat anyone doing that,” said Deering coach Josh Stowell. “It was just our second day on a field and the first was also a game, so we haven’t been able to practice. It way too many mistakes today. Those errors are correctable.”

The Rams were at Massabesic Tuesday, host Bonny Eagle Thursday, welcome Gorham Saturday and play host to Marshwood Tuesday of next week.

Portland opened its season at Kennebunk Tuesday. The Bulldogs host Falmouth Saturday (see theforecaster.net for game story) and welcome Thornton Academy Tuesday of next week.

Softball

The Cheverus/NYA co-op softball team got off to an auspicious start last Thursday, defeating visiting Sanford, 9-2. Macknezie Turner earned the victory and struck out nine and Madisyn Durgin hit a solo home run. Alexandra Hammond, Caitlin Kennedy-Jensen and Elizabeth Kennedy each added a single and a double. The Stags’ home game versus South Portland Saturday was postponed due to rain. Cheverus/NYA was at two-time defending Class A champion Scarborough Monday, welcomes Westbrook Wednesday, goes to Thornton Academy Friday, then plays host to Biddeford Monday of next week.
