We write to encourage Falmouth residents to participate in the regional Guns to Garden Tools event on May 11.

Gun give back is an opportunity to help prevent gun violence and encourage gun safety in our town. Whether a resident inherited a gun that they have no need for or has a gun in the home that is no longer desired, Falmouth’s gun give back program lets all residents turn in unwanted firearms and ammunition without judgment or fear of repercussion. These items will later be melted down, turned into useful garden tools and distributed to community garden programs.

In addition, the Police Department will offer free trigger locks on May 11. This is a great opportunity for folks who want to retain their firearms, but have young kids in the house or have grandchildren who visit, whom they’d like to protect.

As councilors and community members, we are committed to doing whatever we can to get unwanted weapons off the street, and to secure wanted firearms from accidental discharge. We thank the Falmouth Police Department for its participation and invite our community members to join with many others on May 11.
