CHEBEAGUE — A bill that would exempt the Chebeague Transportation Co. from paying sales tax on its new ferry was unanimously approved by the Legislature’s Taxation Committee May 17 and now heads to votes in the House and Senate.

The bill, LD 124, is sponsored by Rep. Janice Cooper, D-Yarmouth, because the Chebeague ferry also is as the island’s water ambulance, providing a critical and timely connection to the mainland.

“I believe the Taxation Committee approved this bill because they were moved by the testimony of Chebeague residents, describing lives that had been saved and the generosity of the (Chebeague Transportation Co.) and its crew in providing this service 24/7 at no cost,” Cooper said.

State Sen. Cathy Breen, D-Falmouth, who cosponsored the bill, last week said “LD 124 is a common-sense bill that simply recognizes that Chebeague Island’s badly needed new ferry serves the community as an ambulance.”
