PORTLAND — The city’s annual Memorial Day celebration is scheduled to commence at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 27, with a parade down Congress Street.

The parade, to honor those who died in service to their country, is organized by the American Legion Harold T. Andrews Post No. 17. The route runs from Longfellow Square to Monument Square.

A remembrance ceremony will be held in Monument Square following the parade.

In addition, the Deering neighborhood will celebrate with a 2 p.m. parade organized by the Deering Center Memorial Day Fund.

That event begins at Longfellow School and ends at the cemetery’s south gate. Various ceremonies will follow at locations throughout the cemetery.

Downtown street closures, running from 9 a.m.-noon, include Congress Street from Mellen to State streets; State Street from Cumberland Avenue to Congress Street, and Dow Street from Congress to Brackett streets.

During the parade street closures will include Congress Street from State to Temple streets; High Street from Spring to Deering streets; Forest Avenue from Cumberland Avenue to Congress Street; Casco Street from Shepley to Congress streets; Center Street from Free to Congress streets; Preble Street from Cumberland Avenue to Congress Street, and Federal Street Extension from Monument Square to Temple Street.

Evergreen Cemetery, off Stevens Avenue in Portland, will be the site of several Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 27.
