LEWISTON—This year’s Class A Outdoor Track and Field State Meet took place at Lewiston High School on Saturday, June 1. On the boys’ side of things, Scarborough edged past Thornton by 12 points, and on the girls’ side, Cheverus bested Gorham by 29.

A number of local names bubbled to the surface at the competition. Unsurprisingly (but always pleasantly), Westbrooker Nyagoa Bayak won the High Jump. Bayak wasn’t especially delighted with her winning leap, 5-08.00, but nor did she get too down on herself.

“I’m not the happiest,” she said, “but I’ve been going through injuries this season, so I was happy to just get through and clear 5-08 at the first attempt. If I got 5-10, I would’ve went to 6-00 and just tried it.”

“I wasn’t really that confident today,” Bayak went on. “My knee hurts a little, so hopefully I could just go through and clear the heights I needed to clear in order to win. I did what I had to do. I’m not too upset…I’m pretty happy with my performance. Not too happy. You can always do better.”

Bayak has often competed, in the past, in the Triple Jump as well. That event is hard, though, on the body, and she opted to duck out of it for States.

“It’s just a lot on your legs after a while,” she said, “and High Jump, you need a lot of legs.”

Likewise unsurprisingly, Bayak’s fellow Blaze Mahamed Sharif won the 800. Meanwhile, in the girls’ relays, Gorham won the 4×100 and Bonny Eagle the 4×800.
